Pearl River sweeps Southwest
in tennis openers
Wildcats trim Bears
6-3; Lady Wildcats drop Lady Bears 7-2 in Summit

SUMMIT — Pearl River
Community College's men's and women's tennis teams swept Southwest here
Thursday in their 2000 season openers.
The Wildcats dropped
the Bears 6-3, while the Lady Wildcats trimmed the Lady Bears 7-2.
In men's singles action,
Joey Sumrall (PR) defeated Patrick Leggett (SW) 2-6, 6-2, and 6-4; Josh
Vincent (SW) defeated Robert Brumfield (PR) 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (5); Kevin Goldsmith
(PR) defeated Blake Jenson (SW) 6-0, 6-0; Matt Nunnally (PR) defeated Shawn
Smith (SW) 6-4, 6-2; Mark Hancock (PR) defeated Blake Frazier (SW) 6-3,
6-3; and Jeff Hanks (SW) defeated Kevin Rhudy (PR) 6-4, 6-7 (6).
In men's doubles,
Brumfield-Nunnally (PR) defeated Leggett-Vincent (SW) 8-3, Sumrall-Hancock
(PR) defeated Smith-Frazier (SW) 8-4, and Jenson-Hanks (SW) defeated Rhudy-Williams
(PR) 8-7 (4).
In women's singles,
Barbara Hiers (SW) defeated Nicole Shepherd (PR) 7-6 (4), 6-2; Pamela Miller
(PR) defeated Brooke Christian (SW) 6-0, 7-5; Ilene McCombs (PR) defeated
Kimberly Prentiss (SW) 6-3, 7-5; Michelle Creely (PR) defeated Charlsie
Whetstone (SW) 6-2, 4-6, 6-4; Lori Flynt (PR) defeated Kandy Yawn (SW)
6-2, 6-4; and Betsy Brown (SW) defeated Amanda Anderson (PR) 6-2, 7-5.
In women's doubles,
Shepherd-Miller (PR) defeated Hiers-Christian (SW) 8-7 (6), Creely-Flynt
(PR) defeated Prentiss-Whetstone (SW) 8-3, and McCombs-Anderson (PR) defeated
Yawn-Brown (SW) 8-2.
Pearl River returns
to action Tuesday when South Division rival Mississippi Gulf Coast visits
for men's and women's match-ups beginning at 2 p.m. East Central visits
