Pearl River splits with
Co-Lin
Lady Wildcats upset
nation's No. 10 team 72-60; Wildcats fall 79-70
|
POPLARVILLE Pearl River Community College split with Copiah-Lincoln
in men's
and women's South Division
basketball action here Monday in M.R. White Coliseum.
The Lady Wildcats upset the nationally-ranked Lady Wolves 72-60, avenging
a 74-51
disaster November 18 in
Wesson to improve to 8-11 overall and 5-4 in division play, while the
Wildcats fell 79-70, dropping
to 12-7 and 5-4. Co-Lin's women fell to 18-3 and 5-3, while the
men improved to 16-4 and
5-3.
In women's action, CLCC led 22-20 with 2:00 left in the first half, but
Nichole Hearns
sank a 2 and a 3 to give
PRCC the lead for good. Ann Webster bucketed 2 free throws to pull the
Lady Wolves within 1 with
10:50 left, but PRCC answered with a 20-13 run, paced by Laura
Walters 12 points, to put
the Lady Wildcats up 57-49 with 4:20 left.
Co-Lin, which leads the division and is ranked No. 10 in the nation, never
recovered.
PRCC led by 11 twice during
the remaining time and Quinisea Hatten's 2 free throws in the final
seconds ended the scoring
and gave the Lady 'Cats their largest lead of the night at 12. Hearns
and Walters were 6-for-6
from the foul line, while Hatten was 1-for-5 before sinking 4 straight.
Hearns finished with a game-high 20 points (2 treys), 6 assists, and 6
rebounds; while
Walters had 16 points and
7 boards. Hatten hit for a career-high 15 points, hauled-in 14 rebounds,
and had 4 assists; while
Lori DeSilvey scored 6, LaKita Robertson 5, Shana Caldwell and Kizzie
Mark, 3 each; and Sarah
Nabours and Alicia Gavagnie, 2 each. Mark also had 11 boards.
Rusti Smith paced Co-Lin with 15 points (3 treys), while Webster had 13,
Victoria Mason
16, Melanie Fairchild 7
(1 trey), Erica Bennett 5, Sheritha Simmons 3, and Tiffany Dales and
Chastidy Sandifer, 2 each.
Webster, Sandifer, and Rolisha Brown each had 6 boards, while
Shanequa Dennie had 6 assists.
From the free-throw line, PRCC was 26 of 35 (74 percent), while CLCC was
12 of 23 (52
percent).
In men's action, Co-Lin led until Artrise (Freeze) Stampley's bucket gave
PRCC a 19-18
edge with 6:10 left in the
first half, then Neal Broome scored 6 straight to make things 25-22.
Brandon Dickerson ended
CLCC's first-half scoring with a trey and 2-pointer, while Doug Green
hit 1 of 2 foul shots. PRCC
trailed 27-26 at the intermission.
Pearl River never regained the lead. Nick Shattles hit 2 free throws and
a trey to tie things
at 36 just over 4 minutes
into the second half. With 5:05 left, Taboris Lindsey sank 4 free throws
and a field goal to pull
the Wildcats within 2 57-55 but the Wolves ended
the goings-on
with a 22-15 run.
Lamayn Wilson led PRCC with 23 points, including 4 treys, while Broome
added 17 (2
treys) and had 6 rebounds.
Lindsey scored 10 (4 rebounds), Shattles 9 (4 rebounds), Green 4 (1
trey, 3 assists), Stampley
4 (4 assists), and Marcus Millhouse 3.
For Co-Lin, Dickerson led with 24 points, while Barry Whitley had 22 (4
treys), Elwood
Brown 11, Gariel Brownlee
9, Curtis Walker 7, and Marcus Calcote and Rod Haynes, 3 each.
From the free-throw line, PRCC was 10 of 13 (77 percent), while CLCC was
14 of 22 (64
percent).
PRCC travels to Perkinston to take on Mississippi Gulf Coast Thursday,
when hosts
Southwest Monday to end
the regular season. Both are South Division games. Women's action
gets underway at 6 p.m.,
followed by the men's at 8 p.m. |
