Pearl River sweeps Delgado
Wildcats top century
mark in 106-84 win; Lady Wildcats 74-49 victors
|
POPLARVILLE Pearl River Community College swept Delgado in
men's and
women's basketball action
here Thursday in M.R. White Coliseum.
The Wildcats topped the century mark for the first time this season with
a 106-84 victory
to improve to 12-6 overall,
while the Lady Wildcats avenged an earlier lopsided loss to the Lady
Dolphins with a 74-49 win
to improve to 7-11. Both DCC squads dropped to 10-12.
In the men's game, the high-scoring affair came as no surprise as the Wildcats
claimed a
93-90 victory in the two
teams' first match-up in New Orleans, but no one expected Pearl River's
complete dominance this
time around.
PRCC trailed for the first 5 minutes, but back-to-back 3-pointers by All-State
forward
Lamayn Wilson gave The River
a 14-11 lead and it never relinquished it. The Dolphins fought
back to within 3
27-24 midway into the half, but the 'Cats answered with a 26-18
run to
end the half on top 53-42.
All-State forward Neal Broome of Bassfield scored 12 straight points
during one stretch of the
first half.
The second half was all Pearl River's. The Wildcats opened-up with a 20-6
run to grab its
largest lead of the night
25 points (73-48) with some 13 minutes left. PRCC hit the century
mark when Hattiesburg freshman
Tavares Allen hit his only bucket of the game with 2:35
remaining to make things
100-80.
Wilson finished with a game-high 36 points, including 7 treys and 6 rebounds,
while
Broome added 32 and had
11 boards. Marcus Millhouse of Selma, Ala., scored 19 points,
grabbed a game-high 16 boards,
and had 5 assists and 2 steals. Nick Shattles of Hattiesburg
(Forrest County AHS) scored
4, Jason Broom of Sumrall 3, and Junior Davis, Allen, and Artrise
(Freeze) Stampley had 2
a piece. Stampley also led PRCC with 5 assists.
Jerome LaGrange paced Delgado with 17 points, while Lamont Turner had 15,
Corey
Johnson 14, Willie Clark
11, Eddrin Williams 10, Courtney Butler 9, Chris Deville 4, and John
Myles 2.
From the free-throw line, PRCC was 16 of 20 (80 percent), while DCC was
6 of 8 (75
percent).
Back in November, the Lady Dolphins pounded the Lady Wildcats 70-44 in
New Orleans,
but this go-around it was
all PRCC. Pearl River scored 18 points in the first 9 minutes before
DCC's Dawn Winn, who hit
6 treys in the first meeting, sank a pair of free throws for the Lady
Dolphins first points of
the night with 10:50 left in the first half.
The Lady Wildcats led by as much as 21 in the first half and 25 in the
second half.
All-State forward LaKita Robertson of Thibodeaux, La., hit a season-high
20 points and
hauled-in 7 rebounds, while
Nichole Hearns of Miami, Fla., added 15 and had 8 assists. Mindy
Ladner of Perkinston (Hancock
County) exited in the first half with a knee injury, but managed 9
points, while Lori DeSilvey
of Kiln (Hancock County) added 8 and had 3 steals. Laura Walters of
Petal had 6, Kizzie Mark
of Sandy Hook (West Marion) and Alicia Gavagnie of Bay St. Louis
(Bay High), 4 each; Sarah
Nabours of Poplarville, Quinisea Hatten of Hattiesburg (North
Forrest), and Tamikia Hartfield
of Hattiesburg (North Forrest), 2 a piece; and Kara Primes of
Poplarville and Shana Caldwell
of Lumberton (Sumrall), 1 each. Gavagnie also grabbed 7 boards
and had 5 assists.
For DCC, Winn finished with 19 points and 5 rebounds, while Latasha James
