Lady Wildcats split in
division openers
Error-plagued PRCC
softballers win first game 14-9, but lose nightcap to Lady Bears 10-3
SUMMIT Pearl River Community College split with Southwest in
its women's South
Division softball openers
here Tuesday.
The Lady Wildcats won the first game 14-9 despite committing six errors,
but lost the
nightcap 10-3. PRCC committed
five miscues in the loss.
PRCC stands at 4-6 overall and 1-1 in the division, while SWCC is 1-3 and
1-3.
"Errors have been the reason for our lack of success," said PRCC head coach
Laurie
Neelis. "We were fortunate
to win the first game with all those mistakes. We're just making way
too many fundamental errors.
We're working hard in practice, but we're just beating ourselves."
In the opening contest, Pearl River led 5-3 after three innings, but the
Lady Bears rallied
with five in the bottom
of the fourth to go up 8-5. The Lady 'Cats cut into SWCC's lead with a
solo run in the top of the
fifth, then opened the flood gates with six in the sixth and two in the
seventh to take the victory.
Southwest's final run came in the seventh.
PRCC finished with 21 hits, paced by Rie-Rie Willoughby's two singles and
double, while
Kristen Parker contributed
a triple and a single, and Charity Knight and Traci McMichael each
had a double and a single.
Amanda Adams, Melanie Cox, Alleen Seale, Leslie Wells, and Pinky
Willis, all had two singles
apiece, while Lynde Cuevas doubled.
Southwest finished with 17 hits and four errors.
Willis was the winning pitcher, while Amanda Sumrall picked up the loss.
In the second game, PRCC went up 1-0 in the top of the second, but SWCC
scored three
in the third, five in the
fourth, while adding solo runs in the fifth and sixth. Pearl River's two
runs
in the top of the seventh
wasn't enough.
Seal paced PRCC's 15-hit attack with two singles and a double, while Meagan
Cox,
Charity Knight, McMichael,
and Kristie Williams all had two singles each.
Southwest finished with 11 hits and two errors.
Pearl River returns to the diamond Thursday with a road trip to Raymond
to take on
division foe Hinds, then
hosts Bishop State (Ala.) Friday and division rival Jones Wednesday. All
are 3 p.m. doubleheaders. |
