PRCC, Southwest split
Wildcats win 1-0, then
lose 1-0 to drop to 19-6 overall, 7-3 in league play
POPLARVILLE Pearl River split with Southwest Mississippi in
South Division
community college doubleheader
baseball action here Friday, winning the first game 1-0, but losing the
nightcap by the same score.
PRCC dropped to 19-6 overall and 7-3 in division play with the loss, while
Southwest improved to 10-15
and 4-8.
The Wildcats went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first when Eric Adkins of
Purvis
bashed a two-out double,
advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored off a single by
Jeff Middleton of Mobile.
Only four Southwest players reached base in the contest.
Middleton (3-1) hurled a one-hitter in picking up the win. He struck out
six over
his seven innings on the
mound, while walking two. Lucien Weber (2-4) was the losing pitcher, striking
out six, walking none, and hitting two batters.
Eric Adkins of Purvis paced PRCC's six-hit attack with a double and a single,
while Nate Murray of Bogalusa,
Jake Smith of Picayune High, and Jared Harris of
Poplarville all singled.
Marshall Varnado's lead off double in the top of the sixth was Southwest's
only
hit.
In the nightcap, the Bears scored the winning run in the top of the seventh
when
Michael Clements walked
and Dustin Wilkinson followed with a single. That set the
stage for Varnado's RBI
single to ice the game.
Winning pitcher Mike Dumiller (2-2) struck out two in the bottom of the
seventh
with a Wildcat base runner
at third. He finished the game with seven strikeouts, while
walking two.
Jonathan Mitcham (3-1) of North Forrest was the losing pitcher in going
the
distance. He struck out
five and walked three.
Justin Gros of Oak Grove paced PRCC's four-hit effort with two singles,
while
Adkins and Jason Santiago
of St. Stanislaus both singled.
Southwest finished with six hits all singles by Wilkinson,
Varnado, Tim Daigle,
Phillip Coffey, Brady Sledge,
and Justin Chiasson.
Pearl River travels to Copiah-Lincoln in Wesson Tuesday for a 4 p.m. division
doubleheader, then visits
East Mississippi in Scooba next Thursday for a 3 p.m. non-
division twin bill.
