Holmes sweeps Pearl River Wildcats trailed by 11 in final minute of 90-87 loss;
Lady Wildcats get blown out 78-56 by Lady Bulldogs

    POPLARVILLE — Pearl River Community College was swept by MACJC non-division rival Holmes here Monday in the Poplarville High gymnasium, but the Wildcats came within a whisker of pulling off a miracle victory.
    PRCC trailed by 11 — 86-75 — with a mere 50 seconds left in the men’s game, but mounted an incredible 12-3 run to cut the visting Bulldogs’ lead to 90-87 at the final gun. The Wildcats dropped to 4-3 overall with the loss, while the Bulldogs improved to 5-4. The women’s game was a different story, as the Lady Wildcats dropped to 1-6 with a 78-56 defeat. Holmes improved to 6-2.
    The men’s match up saw a see-saw battle in the first half with the scored tied five times and the lead exchanging hands four times in the first 10 minutes before PRCC’s Darius Acker of St. Stanislaus sank his only trey of the night to put the Wildcats up 23-22 with 9:50 left. His bucket kicked off a 20-15 run to give the hosts a 43-37 edge at the intermission.
    Holmes’ Sean Johnson made good on a three-point play at the 7:11 mark to tie it up for a fifth time in the opening half, then a minute later sank a bucket to give the Bulldogs a brief 30-29 edge. Brandon Rockwell of Bay High immediately answered with a basket to put the Widlcats back on top with 5:47 left. PRCC built its lead to as much as eight points twice before halftime.
    Richard Ford’s second three pointer of the game capped an18-12 Holmes run that knotted things up at 55 with 14:20 left in the game, then Richard Griffin’s trey less than a minute later put the Bulldogs up 60-57.
    Pearl River regained the lead at 66-64 with just under 10 minutes remaining when Jeremy Holder of Lumberton sank his only three of the game. The Wildcats stayed on top for the next three minutes before back-to-back buckets by Johnson put Holmes up by one and the Bulldogs never looked back.
    Johnson’s baskets kicked off a 20-16 run by the Bulldogs to ice the victory. Holmes’ 11-point lead in the final minute seemingly iced the victory, but PRCC bounced back with two threes from Tyshawn Brown of Gulfport High and two-point baskets by Alton Robinson of Hattiesburg High and Acker to pull the Wildcats to within two with nine seconds left. Holmes’ four successful foul shots in the final minute proved to be the difference.
    Johnson paced Holmes with a game-high 20 points, including two treys and an impressive eight-of-11 effort from the field, while Derrick Huffman added 16 and sank 10 of his 13 free throw attempts. Richard Griffin scored 14, including four treys; while Richard Ford added 11 (two treys, eight rebounds), Jonathan Coleman nine (one trey, seven RB, three steals), Richard Worthy seven, Octavius Thompson six (six rebounds), Michael Marzette 4, and Keith Simmons 3.

From three-point range, Pearl River was eight of 18 (44.4 percent) to HCC’s nine of 24 (37.5 percent).
    In the women’s game, Holmes built a 25-15 lead at the 6:15 mark of the first half, but PRCC put together an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to pull to within two. Angela Miller of Penbroke, Ga., sank a pair of free throws to cap the scoring surge, but those two buckets were the final points for the Lady Wildcats in the first half.
    The Lady Bulldogs ended the half with a 17-0 run to lead 42-23 at the intermission and built their lead to as many as 35 points twice in the second half.
    Lurena Robinson led Holmes with a game-high 16 points (three treys, five rebounds), while Angie Bounds added 14 (two treys, four assists), Myseshia Johnson 10 (six rebounds), Lavannah White eight (two treys, eight rebounds), Tiffany Hubbard seven (one trey, 10 rebounds), Tamara Jackson six, Portia Woodard four (one trey), Adrieme Walker four, Michelle Spires(ten rebounds) and Jessica Adkinson, three each; and Tiffany Woodcock two.
