Wildcats 2-0, Lady ’Cats winless after split with East Mississippi
Holder pours in 24 to propel PRCC to 75-57 victory over Lions;
Women’s 37-20 second-half comeback falls three short of win

    POPLARVILLE — Pearl River Community College split with East Mississippi in MACJC non-division basketball action here Monday in the Poplarville High gymnasium with the Wildcats blowing out the Lions 75-57 and the Lady ’Cats falling 58-55 after trailing by 20 at the intermission.
    PRCC’s men are undefeated at 2-0 following the victory, while its women remain winless at 0-2. East Miss’ men dropped to 1-3, while its women evened their overall mark to 2-2.
    In women’s action, the Lady Lions’ defense held the Lady Wildcats to a meager 18 points in the first half while building their lead to as many as 21 points — 38-17 — in the final minute before intermission.
    But Coach Ed Walley’s troops turned the tables in the second half, taking a lopsided 37-20 advantage only to fall four points shy of a first win.
    After EMCC’s Kandra Bell scored the first bucket of the second half to make it 38-18, PRCC went on a 22-12 run to cut the Lady Lions’ lead to 10 when Laterrica Booth capped the scoring surge with a steal and a bucket to make it 50-40 with 4:45 left. Booth, a freshman guard from Bassfield, scored all 10 of her points for the night during the run.
    EMCC’s Kenya James sake a pair of foul shots with 3:15 left to put the Lady Lions up by 13, but Pearl River answered with 14-2 run to pull to within one — 56-55 — when Booth snatched her last of seven steals on the night and passed to Tanesha Stokes of East Marion for the bucket with 23 seconds left. East Miss ended the game with two free throws.
    Nieka Bell paced the Lady Lions with 16 points (nine rebounds), while Sheena Robinson added 14 (10 boards), Danielle Baldwin 12 (six boards), Rebecca Mitchell six (one trey), Keyana James five, Olivia Reed three, and Theresa Brandy two.
    Calla Daggins of Mereaux, La., led Pearl River with 12 points, while Booth added 10, Tina Lewis of Mableton, Ga.(six boards), Ashley Jones of Florence, and Stokes, six a piece; Dee Robertson of North Forrest five, Brittany Blackston of Hattiesburg High four (five rebounds), Angela Miller of Penbroke, Ga., three (one trey); Shannon Primos of Forrest County AHS two, and Cashara Outlaw of Pearl one.
    From the foul line, PRCC was six of 15 (40 percent), while EMCC was 15 of 23 (65.2 percent). The Lady Wildcats hit 38.7 percent (24 of 62) from the field to the Lady Lions’ 21 of 52 (40.4 percent) effort. Pearl River sank one of seven three-point attempts (14.3 percent), while East Miss was one of 10 (10 percent).
    In the men’s game, it was all Pearl River from the get-go. The Wildcats held the Lions scoreless for the first four-and-a-half minutes of the contest before Derrick Westbrook sank a foul shot to make it 7-1, then PRCC went on an 18-8 run over the ensuing seven minutes to build its lead to 25-9. After the Wildcats went up by 16 for a second time with 4:00 left in the half, East Miss answered with an 11-6 run — including three treys — to cut PRCC’s lead to 38-27 at the intermission.
    The Lions’ momentum continued in the early part of the second half, opening with an 8-2 run to pull to within five with 17:45 left. Sophomore forward Jeremy Holder of Lumberton bucketed three treys during the Wildcats’ ensuing 16-3 run to make it 56-38 PRCC. Each team scored 19 points from there on out.
    Narvell Jackson paced East Miss with 10 points (two treys), while Mark Ford and Cornelius Miles added seven each, Patrick Winters six, Lee Nelson (one trey), Derrick Westbrook, and Patrick Jackson (one trey), five a piece; Chris Odom (one trey) and Cornelius Martin, three each, Quentin White two, and Wouter Jans one.
