PRCC’s Charles Deas first-team
NJCAA preseason All-American
POPLARVILLE — Pearl River Community College defensive lineman Charles Deas has been named a 2009 first-team preseason All-American by the NJCAA, which released its elite annual listing Thursday.
The sophomore from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., joins four other players from the MACJC garnering first-team honors, while three others earned second-team accolades.
Deas, who towers at 6-foot-5 and weighs in at 315, was an integral part of the Wildcat defense last season which finished 23rd in the nation, giving up 275.9 yards a game. His personal totals included 56 tackles (34 solo, 22 assists) and 4.5 quarterback sacks.
Other first-team selections from the MACJC include quarterback Randall Mackey, offensive lineman Quartney Cox, and defensive end Claude Davis, all of East Mississippi; and offensive lineman Lamar Holmes of Itawamba. Second-team honorees from the league
include wide receiver Anthony Jackson of Jones County, defensive end Wayne Dorsey of Mississippi Gulf Coast, and defensive back Dequan Menzie of Copiah-Lincoln.
Pearl River enters the 2009 football season ranked No. 11 in the NJCAA’s top 25 preseason poll that was also released Thursday.
The Wildcats are one of five MACJC teams in the balloting, which also included No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast, the defending state champions, No. 7 East Mississippi, No. 14 Jones County, and No. 19 Northwest Mississippi.
Defending national champion Butler CC (Kan.) is No. 1 in the poll.
