Baton Rouge sweeps River
Lady Wildcats fall 70-60; ’Cats suffer 77-72 setback
BATON ROUGE, La. — Pearl River Community College women’s and men’s basketball teams were swept by Baton
Rouge CC here Thursday with the Lady Wildcats suffering a 70-60 setback and the Wildcats falling 77-72.
PRCC opened its 2009-2010 season with a sweep over Wallace-Selma (Ala.) on Monday with its women winning
81-61 and it men taking a high-scoring 118-92 blowout. Both Wildcat squads even their overall marks to 1-1, while BRCC’s
women improved to 1-2 and its men remain undefeated at 3-0.
In the women’s game, the Lady Bears led 32-24 at the intermissioin, then outscored the Lady Wildcats 38-36 in the
second half to seal the victory.
Brittany Weathers of Oak Grove paced PRCC with 14 points, while Kenyatta Epps of Yazoo City added 12, Jen Ervin
of Atlanta, Ga., 11; Olivia Magee of Columbia High eight, Shandell Peters of East Marion seven, Nicole Holder of Lumberton
High four, Sam Fairley of Hattiesburg High three, and Courtney Lacoste of Hancock County one.
Jessica St. Cyr hit a game-high 16 points to lead BRCC, while Teagra Clifton added 13, Karlisha Thompson eight, GG
Williams six, Brittany Brown and Chassity Smith, five each; Kiara Etienne, Sedreka Plummer, and Jean Spears, four a piece;
Windy Charles three, and Tynisha Allen two.
From the field, Pearl River hit 39.3 percent (22 of 56) to Baton Rouge’s 49 percent (25 of 51); while at the foul line,
PRCC was 16 of 30 (53.3 percent) to BRCC’s 17 of 31 (54.8 percent).
In the men’s game, the Wildcats trailed by as many as 20 points in the first half, but rebounded to cut the Bears’ lead to
16 — 47-31 — at the break. PRCC outscored its host 41-30 in the second half only to come up six points shy of victory.
Zach Vickers of Laurel Hill, Fla., paced the Wildcats with 12 points, while Denzel McDaniel of Mobile, Ala., added 11;
Phillip Crawford, also of Mobile, and Josh Moore of Jackson (Forest Hill) had 10 each; Kenderick Washington of Hinds AHS
nine, Kegan Houston of Quitman High and Rod Little of Moss Point, seven each; and Mychael Keeler of Oak Grove two.
William Nelson scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Bears, while Paul Hilliard added 19, Arsenio Francis 13,
Rarlensse Nelson seven, Ryan Layssard, Timile Lewis, and Jacoby Ross, four a piece; and Josh Upchurch two.
From the field, Pearl River hit 41.8 percent (23 of 55), including a dismal zero-for-11 from three-point range; while
Baton Rouge hit 44.6 percent (25 of 56). At the foul line, PRCC was 26 of 33 (78.8 percent), while BRCC was 22 of 36 (61.6
percent).
Pearl River hits the road for Holmes in Goodman on Monday for a pair of MACJC non-division games at 5 p.m.
(women) and 7 p.m. (men), then it travels to Delgado CC in New Orleans next Thursday for women’s and men’s contests at the
same game times.
