River sweeps Holmes
Lady Wildcats 77-51 winners;’Cats victorious 72-69
GOODMAN — Pearl River Community College women’s and men’s basketball teams swept MACJC non-division
rival Holmes here Monday with the Lady Wildcats taking a lopsided 77-51 victory, while the Wildcats were 72-69 winners.
Both Wildcat squads improved to 2-1 overall, while HCC’s women remain winless at 0-3 and its men are now 1-2.
In the women’s game, Pearl River jumped out to a commanding 44-23 advantage at the intermission, then outscored the
host Lady Bulldogs 33-28 in the second half to take the 26-point win.
Shandell Peters of East Marion paced the Lady Wildcats with 13 points and six rebounds, while Jen Ervin of Atlanta,
Ga., added 12, Kenyatta Epps of Yazoo City 10, Nicole Holder of Lumberton High nine, Sam Fairley of Hattiesburg High and
Brittany Weathers of Oak Grove High (six boards), six each; Olivia Magee of Columbia High five, and Charlene Green of North
Pike High two.
Justinne McClain led Holmes with 13, while Laquita Armstead, Dorothy Carter, and Keondra Prevost added seven a
piece. Latara Archie and Marquisha Pointer scored six each, Lawanda Greer two, and Felicia Ware one.
From the field, PRCC sank 29 of 56 (51.8 percent) of hits field goal attempts to HCC’s 18 of 56 (32.1 percent), while
at the foul line, the Lady ’Cats hit 66.6 percent (14 of 21) to the Lady Bulldogs’ 52.4 percent (11 of 21).
In men’s action, the Wildcats led 30-25 at the half, while the Bulldogs outscored their likes 44-42 in the second half but
PRCC hung on for the three-point win.
Josh Moore of Jackson (Forest Hill High) led The River with 22 points, while Phillip Crawford of Mobile, Ala., added a
career-high 16, Denzel McDaniel, also of Mobile, 10 (six rebounds), Rod Little of Moss Point eight, Emil Jones of North
Forrest High and Kenderick Washing of Hinds AHS, five each; and Kegan Houston of Quitman High, Lakendrick Maye of
Prentiss High, and Desmond Ratliff of Canton High, two a piece.
Pearl River hit 55.1 percent (27 of 49) from the field to Holmes’ 46.7 percent (28 of 60), while the Wildcats were 16 of
29 (55.2 percent) at the free-throw line to the Bulldogs’ nine-of-16 (56.3 percent) effort.
Pearl River hits the road for Delgado CC in New Orleans Thursday for a pair of interstate contests at 5 p.m. (women)
and 7 p.m. (men), then returns to MACJC action Monday with a road trip to non-division rival Mississippi Delta in Moorhead at
the same game times.
