River sweeps Northwest
Lady Wildcats 5-1 victors, Wildcats take 6-1 win

      SENATOBIA — Pearl River Community College swept Northwest Mississippi here Tuesday in MACJC women’s and men’s inter-division soccer action.
      The Lady Wildcats took a 5-1 victory to improve to 10-0-1 overall, while the Wildcats were 6-2 winners and are now 5-4-1. Both Northwest squads dropped to 3-5 overall.
      In the women’s game, things were knotted at 1-1 at the intermission, but Pearl River sealed the win in the second half. Breeana Fortenberry and Analejsia Lee, both of Picayune High, scored two goals each for the Lady Wildcats, while Laura Kramer of Hattiesburg High had a solo goal.
      In the men’s game, the Wildcats scored three goals in each half of play and led 3-1 at the break. Josh Barfield of Hancock County and Tyler Szura of Forrest County AHS scored two goals each for PRCC, while Harrison Burton of Hattiesburg High and Larry Edwards of Fruitland Park, Fla., each had solo scores.
      Pearl River returns to action Monday when it plays host to non-division foe East Mississippi at 5:30 p.m. (women) and 7:30 p.m. (men), then it’s a return to South Division play when Southwest Mississippi plays host Wednesday in Summit, kicking off a string of five straight division bouts to wrap the regular season. The SMCC games are at 2 p.m. (women) and 4 p.m. (men), followed by Jones County at home Saturday, Oct. 10; Copiah-Lincoln at home Tuesday, Oct. 13; East Central Saturday, Oct. 17 in Decatur, and Mississippi Gulf Coast at home Wednesday, Oct. 21.
      The 2009 MACJC State Tournament is set for Oct. 24-25 (Saturday and Sunday), while the Region 23 Tournament is on tap for Oct. 31 through Nov. 1 (Saturday and Sunday).
