Wildcats drop to 0-7 after Pirates pull off four-game road sweep in Pensacola, Fla.
PRCC returns to action Tuesday for its home opener against Faulkner State

    PENSACOLA, Fla. — Pearl River Community College’s Wildcats dropped to 0-7 overall after suffering a four-game losing sweep to Pensacola JC’s Pirates here Saturday and Sunday.
    PRCC dropped 6-3 and 14-4 decisions on Saturday, then fell 5-2 and 4-0 on Sunday. PJC improved to 9-5-1 with the four home victories.
    In Saturday’s first game, the Wildcats took a brief 1-0 lead with a solo run in the top of the first, but Pensacola bounced back with three in the bottom of the frame before padding its lead with two more runs in the third and one in the fourth. PRCC also scored solo runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
    Starter Paul Davis picked up the win in going the distance, giving up eight hits, striking out 11, and walking one. Wildcat starter Ashley Graeter of Poplarville High (0-2) picked up the loss in his four innings on the mound, giving up seven hits, striking out five, and walking one, before Josh Hubble of Forrest County AHS relieved in the fifth. He gave up two hits.
    Matt Linton of East Central High paced PRCC at the plate with a double and a single, while Matthew Magee of Petal High and B.J. Smith of Sumrall High both doubled. Zach Farrar of Brandon, Graeter, Temple Harvey of Brandon, and Bryn Whitehead of Sumrall High all had singles.
    Joshua McDorman paced the Pirates’ nine-hit effort with a homer and a single, while Josh Doyle doubled and singled, Steven Groves had two base hits, Saxon Butler homered, and Josh McCray and Tyson Workman both singled.
    PRCC committed two errors in the contest, while PJC committed none.
    In Saturday’s nightcap, the Wildcats went up 3-0 in the top of the first then added a solo run in the second after PJC scored a pair in the bottom of the opening frame.
    The Pirates blew it open in the bottom of the third with four runs, then added two in the fourth, three in the fifth, and three in the sixth to take the 14-4 victory.
    Starter Wes Winters picked up the win in going the distance, giving up five hits, striking out five, and walking one; while Wildcat starter Brett Blaise of Heritage Academy in Columbus (0-2) got the loss in his three innings on the mound. Buck Bernard of Petal High relieved in the fourth, Sean Kelly of Pearl River Central in the fifth, and Beau Underwood of St. Patrick High in the sixth.
    Zach Farrar paced PRCC’s nine-hit effort with three base hits, while Blake Brown led PJC with a homer and a single and Groves and Doyle with two singles each.
    Pearl River committed three errors in the game to Pensacola’s one miscue.
    In Sunday’s opening game, the Pirates led 3-1 after one inning, then scored solo runs in the fourth and sixth. The Wildcats scored its other run in the top of the final frame.
    Starter Charles Basford got the win in going the distance, while Wildcat starter Taylor Martin of Baton Rouge, La. (0-2), got the loss in also going the distance.
    Graeter led PRCC’s seven-hit effort with a double and three singles, while Hawkins homered and singled and Magee singled.
    PJC finished with six hits, led by Doyle’s homer and single, while Tanski had a pair of singles, Butler homered, and Groves singled.
    Pensacola committed two errors in the game, while Pearl River committed none.
    In Sunday’s nightcap game, Pensacola scored solo runs in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to take the 4-0 shutout.
    Starter Josh Tanski got the win in going the distance, while Wildcat starter Magee (0-1) got the loss in his four innings on the mound. He struck out one and walked to before Jared Bond of Denham Springs, La., relieved in the fifth and Hubble in the sixth.
    PRCC finished with six hits, led by Farrar’s two singles, while Hawkins, Linton, Magee, and B.J. Smith all singled.
    Workman paced PJC’s nine-hit attack with a pair of doubles, while McCrary doubled and singled, Brown had two base hits, and Butler and Doyle both singled.
    Each team committed one error in the contest.
    Pearl River returns to action Tuesday for its home opener when Faulkner State (Ala.) visits Wildcat Stadium for a 2 p.m. doubleheader, then the Wildcats travel to Central Alabama CC in Andalusia, Ala., Saturday for an 11:30 a.m. contest against Wallace-Dothan (Ala.) and a 3 p.m. battle against host CACC.
