Lady Wildcats sweep Lady Lions 1-0, 16-1
PRCC softball evens overall mark to 2-2
SCOOBA — Pearl River’s Lady Wildcats evened their 2010 overall record to 2-2 here Tuesday with an MACJC non-division doubleheader softball sweep over East Mississippi’s Lady Lions.
PRCC won the first game 1-0, then bombed EMCC 16-1 in three innings. East Miss dropped to 1-3 overall with the losses.
In the first game, the Lady Wildcats scored contest’s only run in the top of the third inning.
Starter Katie Barrett of Bay High (1-0) picked up the win in going the distance, striking out six and walking three; while Lady Lion starter Courtney Nunn (1-1) got the loss. She also went the seven-inning distance, striking out four and walking one.
Laurin Locke of Petal High and Brandy Rester of Poplarville High paced PRCC’s nine-hit attack with two singles each, while Jordan Adams of D’Iberville High, Mykeal Mayes of Hancock County, Kaci Mitchell of Petal High, Bethany Russell of D’Iberville High, and Baleigh Volking of Enterprise all had base hits.
Courtney Castleberry and Mallory Pace led East Miss’ five-hit effort with two singles each, while Deshuni Sanders had a base hit.
Each team committed one error in the game.
In the nightcap, Pearl River blew it wide open with six runs in the top of the first and five in each of the two ensuing frames before the contest was called. The Lady Lions scored its solo run in the bottom of the opening inning.
Starter Corinne Fraychineaud of Slidell, La. (1-0) got the win in going the three-inning distance, giving up two hits, striking out three, and walking one; while starter Nunn (1-2) got the loss. She pitched the first inning before Laura Sanderson relieved in the second and Mercedes Cotton in the third.
The Lady Wildcats finished with a whopping 18 hits, led by Mitchell who doubled and cracked two singles; while Russell had three base hits, Mallorie Mixon of Picayune High smash a grand slam homer and singled (four RBIs), Maes homered and singled (two RBIs), Locke doubled and singled, Rester and Volking had two singles each; and Lacey Freeman of Forrest County AHS and Brittney Gary of Slidell, La., both singled.
Castleberry and Sanders had base hits for the Lady Lion squad, which committed eight errors in the contest. PRCC played error-free.
Pearl River returns to action Saturday when Faulkner State (Ala.) visits Lady Wildcat Stadium for a 2 p.m. doubleheader, then it’s a PRCC-East Miss rematch Tuesday, Feb. 23, in the second-annual Breast Cancer Awareness Game (4 p.m. doubleheader).
