Lady Wildcats sweep Lady ‘Dawgs 4-2, 7-1
Pearl River softball pumps overall record to 4-2
GOODMAN — Pearl River’s Lady Wildcats pumped their overall record to 4-2 here Thursday with an MACJC non-division doubleheader softball sweep over Holmes’ Lady Bulldogs.
PRCC, which smashed an astounding 15 hits in each of the games, took a come-from-behind 4-2 victory in the first game, then bombed HCC 7-1 in the nightcap of the twin bill.
The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Feb. 12, but was postponed due to rain.
In the first game, things were scoreless for the first three-and-a-half frames before Holmes scored two in the bottom of the fourth. That score remained intact until the top of the sixth when the Lady Wildcats tied it up at 2-2, then took the win with a pair of unanswered runs in the top of the seventh.
Starter Sheila Hall out of Dutchtown High in Baton Rouge, La. (1-2), got the win in going the distance for the Lady ‘Cats; striking out four and walking one; while Lady Bulldog starter Chelsea McCafferty got the loss. She also went the seven-inning distance, recording one strikeout.
Kaci Mitchell of Petal High paced The River with a double and three singles, while Laurin Locke, another Petal High product, doubled and singled. Brandy Rester of Poplarville High and Bethany Russell of D’Iberville High had two singles each, while Taryn Graham of Sumrall High doubled and Jordan Adams of D’Iberville High, Mykeal Mayes of Hancock County High, Mallorie Mixon of Picyaune High, and Baleigh Volking of Enterprise High all singled.
Cody Ables led Holmes’ seven-hit effort with a double and a single, while Brittany Roberts had two base hits, Britnee Hobson doubled, and Ashley Norman and Kandi Ray both singled.
PRCC played error-free in the contest, while HCC had three defensive miscues.
In the nightcap, the first two innings went scoreless before the Lady Wildcats went up 1-0 in the top of the third, then padded their lead to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth.
The Lady Bulldogs cut PRCC’s lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the frame, but The River answered with two in the fifth and solo runs in the sixth and seventh. HCC added its final run in the bottom of the final inning.
Starter Corinne Fraychineaud out of Northshore High in Slidell, La. (2-0), got the win in going the distance; giving up five hits, striking out three, and walking one; while Holmes used three pitchers. Starter Emily Collins got the loss in her five innings on the mound, while Amber Freeman relieved to face four batters in the sixth before Kelsey Wedgeworth arrived to close it out.
Mitchell and Russell led PRCC at the plate with each smacking doubles and two singles, while Adams and Brittney Gary of Slidell (La.) High both doubled and singled. Rester had two base hits, while Blakely Faciane of Slidell (La.) High, Maes, and Volking all had base hits.
Ables led the Lady Bulldogs with two singles, while Beth Livingston, Ray, and Courtney Rhodes all singled.
Pearl River committed one error in the game to Holmes’ two.
Pearl River returns to action Saturday at Faulkner State (Ala.) in Bay Minette, Ala., taking on Jefferson Davis CC (Ala.) at 3 p.m. before playing host FSCC at 5 p.m. The Lady Wildcats return home Tuesday to host East Mississippi in the second-annual Breast Cancer Awareness Game(s) beginning at 4 p.m..
