PRCC splits with Co-Lin in MACJC tennis action

    POPLARVILLE — Pearl River’s Wildcat tennis team remain perfect on the year at 3-0 after defeating last year's MACJC co-state champions the Copiah-Lincoln Wolves here Wednesday.
    The Wildcats pulled out to early lead, winning two of the three doubles' points. At No. 1, Blake Johnson of Lumberton and Steven Bracey of Columbia fell to Co-Lin's Chicho Chaves and Reilly Miller 8-1. At No. 2 doubles, Jordan Henry of Petal and Darnelle Sanford of Hattiesburg defeated Co-Lin's Nico Osorio and Reed Rodgers 8-4. At No. 3 doubles, Roy Odom of Gautier and Dustin Slade of Waveland defeated CoLin's Colby Bass and Jon McLeod 9-7.
    In singles action, the Wildcats dropped the first three matches to give CoLin the lead. Johnson fell to Osorio 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 1 position. In the No. 2 spot, Bracey was defeated by Chaves 6-3, 6-0. At No. 3, Henry fought back to take the match to a third set tiebreak but fell just short to Miller 6-1, 0-6, (10-7). The Wildcats claimed the next two points to tie up the match. At No. 4, Sanford defeated Rodgers 6-1, 6-1, and at No. 6, Slade defeated Bass 6-1, 6-1. Odom claimed the winning point for the Wildcats at the No. 5 position, defeating Joey Shelton 6-1, 5-7, (10-7).
    The Lady Wildcats fought hard but were unable to overcome the Lady Wolves, falling 8-1.
    Emily Leverett of Raymond and Kenyatta Epps of Yazoo City picked up the only point for the Lady Wildcats by defeating Co-Lin's Mary Catherine McDonnieal and Meagan Neal at No. 3 doubles 8-3. In other doubles action, Kasey King of Purvis and Janae Norwood of Hattiesburg fell to Rosa Young and Katie Beth Case 8-4 at the No. 1 position, and Alyssa Wolfe of Foxworth and Kristen Barber of Sandy Hook were defeated by Nicole Magee and Heather Huff at the No. 2 spot 8-3.
    Though there were several close matches, the Lady Wildcats were unable to claim any singles victories against the Co-Lin Lady Wolves. At No. 1, King fell to Young 6-3, 6-0; at No. 2, Norwood was defeated by Case 6-4, 6-3; at No. 3, Wolfe lost to Magee 6-4, 6-1; at No. 4, Barber was defeated by Huff 6-3, 7-6(4); at No. 5, Leverett fell to McDonnieal 7-5, 7-5; and at No. 6, Brookes McInnis of Brooklyn was defeated by Neal 6-0, 6-2.
