Fall
Fest
POPLARVILLE
- A fall festival on Thursday, one-mile fun run on Friday, student government
qualifying, and the annual `Cat Fight" with Jones in Ellisville Saturday
highlight the week's activities for Pearl River Community College students.
Students,
faculty and staff will enjoy music, food, and special entertainment during
C period on Thursday as part of Fall Fest 1999. The next day at 11 a.m.
the Wellness Center will sponsor its first Friday "Fun Run" of the semester.
Students
interested in campaigning for a Freshman or Sophomore Class officer position
must qualify by Wednesday, the same day the Afro-American Cultural Society
is sponsoring a bake sale in the courtyard adjacent to the cafeteria.
Every
afternoon the PRCC football Wildcats, band, and cheerleaders will be preparing
for the Saturday football game against Jones. Are large number of students
and Pearl River supporters are expected for the contest which is set for
7 p.m. on the Jones campus in Ellisville.
September
30 is the deadline for Sports Hall of Fame and Alumnus of the Year Nominations
Nominations for the 1999 Alumnus of the Year, Sports Hall of Fame, and
Distinguished Service awards at Pearl River Community College are due in
the PRCC Development Foundation and Alumni Affairs Office by Thursday,
Sept. 30.
To qualify
as an Alumnus of the Year the individual must have been enrolled at Pearl
River for at least one semester and be an active PRCC Alumni Association
member.
Nominations
for Sports Hall of Fame should include records, honors, and statistics
while participating as a Pearl River athlete. The Distinguished Service
Award is presented to an outstanding alumnus, entity, or organization that
has provided invaluable assistance to the college.
Scholarship
Bingo, Inc. of Picayune was recognized with a Distinguished Service Award
in 1998. Last year's Alumnus of the Year was Arthur Moore Gandy of Poplarville.
Sports Hall of Fame inductees included Gerge Stevens, Gene Gatwood and
Jimmy Gatwood.
All recipients
will be featured during homecoming activities set for Saturday, Oct. 30.
Marion/Jefferson
Davis Alumni Chapter will sponsor fish fry
Pearl
River Community College's Marion and Jefferson Davis County Alumni Chapter
will sponsor its annual fish fry, Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 5:30 p.m. at the Columbia
Waterpark.
Pearl
River cheerleaders, pep band, and staff members will welcome alumni for
the food and fun. The cost is $7.50 per person with net proceeds
used to fund Marion and Jefferson Davis County Alumni scholarships.
Tickets
are available at King Lumber Company in Bassfield, Ken's Welding
Shop in Columbia and Union Planters Ban in Prentiss. Individuals with tickets
include Bill Davis in Columbia and Tony Waits and Cecil Anderson in Prentiss.
PRCC
student awarded $250 National Dean's List Scholarship
Melinda
Ann Spiers, a 31-year old sophomore at Pearl River Community College is
a recipient of a $250 National Dean's List Scholarship.
Spiers,
the wife of Mark D. Spiers and a 1987 Sumrall High School graduate,
represents the Phi Theta Kappa Mississippi/Louisiana region.
Phi Theta
Kappa is the official honor society for two-year colleges, with 29 regions
which includes 1,200 chapters located in the United States, U.S. Territories,
Canada, Germany and Japan. Phi Theta Kappa inducts 70,000 members annually
and is headquartered in Jackson.
Spiers,
an education and math major and work-study student at PRCC, said she was
a housewife until she fulfilled her dream of attending college.
Spiers
was inducted into the Pearl River Iota Mu Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa
last spring and was automatically nominated for the National Dean's List
compilation of honor students.
One student
from each region and one-at-large recipient are chosen for the scholarship.
Pearl
River Community College receives COPS grant
Pearl
River Community College has been awarded a $65,727 COPS grant under the
U.S. Department of Justice's Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS)
program.
The award
will allow Pearl River to hire an additional full-time security officer.
U.S. Representative Gene Taylor announced the award last week.
"The
COPS program helps fight crime because it gives communities more law enforcement
officers," said Rep. Taylor. "Security on the campuses of our colleges
is important to the young men and women who attend school. I congratulate
Pearl River Community College for seeking this grant in order to assure
a safe campus learning environment."
The COPS
grants provide funding for 75 percent of the total salary and benefits
for each officer hired for three years. Pearl River will provide the remaining
funding needed.
