PRCC's Cunningham Sidelined For East Miss Game

POPLARVILLE   Pearl River Community College starting QB Travis Cunningham will
not play against the East Mississippi Lions here Thursday, as the 6-3, 205-pound sophomore
sprained his medial collateral ligament in last week's season opener against Itawamba.
PRCC head athletic trainer Brian Saffle said the injury is not serious, but rest and
rehabilitation is needed.
Cunningham also complained of pain in his throwing shoulder, the same shoulder which
required surgery last year and resulted in his sitting out the 1998 season after playing as a backup
as a freshman in 1997.
"The status of his shoulder remains to be seen, but it's been nearly two years since he has
thrown in a game and it could be mainly soreness," said Saffle.
Cunningham had his passing arm pulled back while in a throwing motion in the 27-16 loss
to ICC. Saffle said Cunningham has pain only when he throws. Team physician Dr. Lance Line
will examine Cunningham Thursday.
The Wildcats will rely on the services of freshmen QBs Andre Granger of Waxahachie,
Tex., and Nate Breland of Brooklyn, who prepped at Forrest County AHS. Neither saw action in
the season opener in which Cunningham completed 8 of 14 passes (no interceptions) for 71 yards.
