2013 MACJC All-Star games set March 28 at East Central

            DECATUR — Mississippi’s top community and junior college basketball players will have an opportunity to showcase their talents at the annual MACJC All-Star Basketball Games (women and men) set for Thursday, March 28, here at East Central Community College.
            Women’s action begins at 6 p.m., while the men’s contest is set for 8 p.m. in the Brackeen-Wood Physical Education Building on the ECCC campus.
            Admission is $5 per person for the NJCAA-sanctioned event.

Pearl River’s Rimmer named All-Region 23, All-MACJC

            POPLARVILLE — Pearl River Community College guard Xavian Rimmer and center Frank Snow have received post-season honors for the 2012-2013 basketball season.
            Rimmer, a 6-foot-2, 185 pound Alcorn State transfer who prepped at Piney Woods School near Jackson; earned All-Region 23 and All-MACJC first-team honors; while Snow, a 6-foot-9 San Angelina CC (Tex.) transfer from Wellington, Fla., earned All-MACJC second-team accolades.

River nips Southern-Shreve in Region 23 quarter-finals

            POPLARVILLE — Eight-seeded Southern University-Shreveport (La.) gave top-seeded and MACJC champion Pearl River all it could handle here Wednesday in the quarter-finals in the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament underway in A.E. Wood Coliseum on the Mississippi College campus.
            But the 20th-ranked Wildcats survived to take a 64-62 victory over the scrappy Jaguars and advance to Friday’s semi-finals in a rematch with fourth-seeded Northwest Mississippi. NWCC ended fifth-seeded Jones County’s season with a 83-68 lopsided win in the quarter-finals.

MACJC champ Pearl River top seed in Region 23 event this week at Miss. College

            POPLARVILLE — The MACJC state champ Pearl River Wildcats enter the 2013  NJCAA Region 23 Tournament Wednesday as the No. 1 seed in A.E. Wood Coliseum on the Mississippi College campus in Clinton.
            The men’s quarter-finals will be played Wednesday, while the women’s are set for Thursday. Men’s and women’s semi-final rounds are Friday with the championship games set for Saturday.
            PRCC head coach Richard Mathis claimed his sixth state championship last Thursday when his Wildcats demolished Mississippi Delta 81-60 in the MACJC title bout.

River dominates Delta in MACJC title bout

            POPLARVILLE — Pearl River’s Wildcats gave Shivers Gymnasium an historical send off here Thursday with a lopsided 81-60 demolition of Mississippi Delta in the men’s championship game of the MACJC State Tournament here Thursday.
            South No. 1 PRCC, the tournament host, never trailed in the final game played in the 65-year-old facility that has housed River basketball since Hurricane Katrina destroyed Marvin R. White Coliseum in August 2005. Construction of the “new” $8.9 million White Coliseum in underway and will be ready for next season.

Second-half Pearl River comeback eliminates Northwest Mississippi in state tournament semi-finals

            POPLARVILLE — Pearl River overcame a 17-point halftime deficit to eliminate Northwest Mississippi 65-62 and propel the Wildcats into the men’s title bout against Mississippi Delta in MACJC State Tournament action here Wednesday in Shivers Gymnasium.
            Trailing 41-24 at the half, tournament host and South Division No. 1 seed PRCC opened the second half with an amazing 22-4 scoring run to take its first lead of the night at 46-45 and never looked back.

River bombs Coahoma 85-61 in MACJC quarter-finals

POPLARVILLE — South No. 1 seed Pearl River bombed North No. 4 Coahoma in the MACJC State Tournament men’s quarter-finals here Tuesday in Shivers Gymnasium, demolishing the Tigers 85-61 to move to Wednesday’s semi-final round against North No. 2 Northwest Mississippi.
            The 20th-ranked and tournament host Wildcats jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first three minutes of the game and never looked back.
            PRCC improved to 20-4 overall with the victory, while CCC, which was eliminated from the tournament, dropped to 9-13.
