Wildcats knock off Gulf Coast to advance in regional

CLINTON – The beat goes on for Pearl River Community College in men’s basketball.

The Wildcats used a smothering defense and got enough out of their offense to roll past Mississippi Gulf Coast 66-57 Tuesday night in the quarterfinal round of the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament at Wood Coliseum on the Mississippi College campus.

PRCC (22-4) advanced to the semifinals to face Northeast Mississippi at 3 p.m. Thursday. The Tigers cruised past Baton Rouge (La.) 75-59 in their quarterfinal. Gulf Coast finished its season 18-7.

PRCC’s Thornton earns MACJC Player of the Week honors

Eric Thornton Jr. POPLARVILLE – For the second time this season, Pearl River Community College freshman Eric Thornton Jr. has been named as MACJC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.

Thornton, who played prep ball at Jackson Murrah, was honored after leading the Wildcats to the 2018 Men’s MACJC State Basketball Tournament championship last week at Senatobia.

Wildcats ready for Gulf Coast in regional tournament

POPLARVILLE – Many times when a team wins a conference championship, it’s hard to for that team to get back up for the next round of postseason play.

But Pearl River Community College men’s basketball coach Chris Oney likes what he’s seen from his Wildcats after they captured the MACJC State Tournament championship last week at Senatobia.

The Wildcats open play Tuesday against Mississippi Gulf Coast in the opening round of the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament at Clinton. Tipoff at Wood Coliseum on the Mississippi College campus is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Wildcats advance to semis with win over Lions

SENATOBIA – It was business as usual for Pearl River Community College, and business was good for the Wildcats in the opening round of the MACJC State Basketball Tournament.

The Wildcats got balanced scoring, with five players in double figures, as PRCC rolled to an 80-63 victory over East Mississippi Monday afternoon at Howard Coliseum on the campus of Northwest Mississippi Community College.

Wildcats take on East Mississippi in state tournament

POPLARVILLE – It’s the second season for Pearl River Community College, as the Wildcats begin postseason play Monday at the MACJC State Basketball Tournament.

PRCC will battle East Mississippi at 2 p.m. Monday in the opening round of the tournament at Howard Coliseum on the campus of Northwest Mississippi Community College in Senatobia.

Pearl River (18-4) enters play as the No. 1 seed from the South Division, while the Lions (12-11) are the fourth seed from the North. The Wildcats claimed the division title with a 79-75 victory at Copiah-Lincoln on Thursday.

Lady Wildcats come up short in loss at Co-Lin

POPLARVILLE – Pearl River Community College came up dry offensively at the worst possible moment, and as a result the Lady Wildcats’ dreams of a postseason berth were dashed.

PRCC was held scoreless for the final 2:45 of the game and fell to Copiah-Lincoln 53-46 in women’s basketball action Thursday night at Wesson.

The loss, coupled with Hinds’ victory over East Central, knocked Pearl River (14-9 overall, 6-8 division) out of spot in the MACJC State Tournament. Co-Lin, which had already clinched a postseason berth, improved to 20-3 and 11-3.

Wildcats defeat Co-Lin to capture South Division title

Jonas James, IIIPOPLARVILLE – The Pearl River Community College men achieved one of the goals they set out for themselves in the preseason, now it’s on to bigger game.

The Wildcats overcame an 18-point first-half deficit, then held off Copiah-Lincoln down the stretch to defeat the Wolves 79-75 Thursday night in basketball action at Wesson.

Lady Wildcats stop Gulf Coast to keep hopes alive

POPLARVILLE – It wasn’t pretty to the casual observer, but Monday night’s win over Mississippi Gulf Coast looked good to Pearl River Community College women’s basketball coach Scotty Fletcher.

Despite scoring their season-low in points, the Lady Wildcats came away winners, as they held Gulf Coast to just eight points in the second half of a 41-31 victory at Perkinston, keeping alive their hopes for a berth in the MACJC State Tournament.
