Wildcats let big lead slip away in loss at Southwest

POPLARVILLE – For the first 25 minutes of playing time Thursday night, Pearl River Community College played a near-perfect game. From that point on, nothing went right.

The scrappy Dolphins, who only dressed six players, gave undefeated PRCC all it wanted before the Wildcats finally pulled away for a 77-69 victory at M.R. White Coliseum.

Freshman Eric Thornton Jr. (Jackson) scored a career-high 29 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, as the Wildcats improved to 9-0 for the season. Delgado dropped to 2-12.

Unbeaten Wildcats on track for outstanding season

POPLARVILLE – Although well over half of the schedule remains to be played, the Pearl River Community College men have reached the proverbial midpoint of the junior college basketball season – the long Christmas break – as the only undefeated team in the MACJC.

While acknowledging that there is a lot of basketball left to be played, Wildcat head coach Chris Oney likes the path his team has taken to its 7-0 record thus far.

“I’m excited about it,” said Oney, who is in his third season as the coach of the Wildcats.

That makes his two most recent signees doubly important, as the Wildcats look to reload after losing 10 sophomores.

PRCC won the services of Cameron Douglas and Javontae McDavid from Columbus High, which won its first Class 6A state championship last month in its first season under veteran head coach Luther Riley.
