Pearl River eyes Region 23 play Thursday in Clinton

           POPLARVILLE — Pearl River’s Lady Wildcats enter the Region 23 Softball Tournament Thursday at Traceway Park in Clinton as the event’s No. 5 seed.
            PRCC earned its berth via its 15-0, five-inning blowout victory over Itawamba in opening-round action of the MACJC State Tournament at Mississippi Gulf Coast CC in Perkinston. The Lady Wildcats were eliminated from the tournament by eventual state champ Jones County with a 3-2 setback. JCJC defeated MGCCC 9-6 in the MACJC title bout.
            Pearl River, seeded fifth in the tournament, opens regional play at 4 p.m. Thursday against No. 2 Gulf Coast on Field One; while No. 3 and top-ranked LSU-Eunice (La.) tackles No. 4 East Central on Field Two and No. 1 JCJC faces No. 6 Itawamba on Field Four at the same game times.
            LSU-E is 52-4 overall, East Central 31-15, eighth-ranked Jones County 39-6, Itawamba 31-13, seventh-ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast 32-9, and Pearl River 25-21.
            The top two finishers in the event, which concludes Saturday, earn berths in the NJCAA Division II Tournament set for May 15-18 at Traceway Park.
