River splits at Miss. Delta

MOORHEAD — Pearl River split with Mississippi Delta in MACJC non-division baseball action here Wednesday with the host Trojans taking an impressive 10-3 victory in the first game before the Wildcats rebounded with a 4-1 nightcap win.
            PRCC, ranked No. 10 in the latest NJCAA Division II baseball poll, is now 9-3 overall with the win, while MDCC is 7-5.
            In the opening game, things were scoreless in the first inning, but Pearl River went up 2-0 in the top of the second. Delta opened the floodgates in the bottom of the frame with a seven-run barrage, then added two in the fourth to make it 9-2.
            Both squads scored solo runs in the sixth.
            Starter Josh Duhon got the win, while Ben Fouche and Dustin Lingle saw relief duty. Wildcat starter Ryan Deemes (0-1), a Nicholls State signee, out of Holy Cross High in Chalmette, La., got the loss; while Anthony Lusco of Bay High and Brandon Fry out of Nease High in Jacksonville, Fla., relieved.
            Pearl River had six hits, but none for extra bases, but Derek Martin of Poplarville High and Nathan Pugh of Starkville High had RBIs for the Wildcats.
            Delta finished with nine hits, led by Danny Springer’s grand-slam homer in the second (five RBIs). Tyler Mize had two RBIs for the Trojans, while Laine Jordan, Cody Marks, Conner Osborne, and Barrett Wooten batted in one run each.
            PRCC committed one error in the game to MDCC’s none.
            In the nightcap, Pearl River went up 2-0 in the top of the first and added solo runs in the fourth and seventh; while Mississippi Delta scored its only run in the bottom of the second.
            Southern Miss signee Christian Talley (4-0) out of Hancock County High started and went the distance, giving up four hits and striking out nine; while starter Devontae Wilson got the loss and Cody Migliore and Austin Travis pitched in relief.
            Paul Pickerrell out of John Hardin High in Elizabethtown, Ky., led the Wildcats’ six-hit effort with a pair of doubles; while Martin doubled and singled (one RBI), Krisjon Wilkerson out of St. Stanslaus homered (two RBIs), and Darien Brown of Hattiesburg High and Forrest Dungan of Columbia High (one RBI), both singled.
            Delta finished with five hits — all singles — while Elgin Lefever drove in the Trojans’ only run.
            Again, The River played error-free, while the Trojans committed two.
            Pearl River returns to action with a two-game stand at Hinds CC in Raymond Sunday, March 3, against Triton (Ill.) at 2 p.m. and Meridian at 6 p.m. before hosting St. Louis Meramec (Mo.) Saturday, March 9, in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
