River sweeps East Miss in 2013 softball openers

SCOOBA — Pearl River’s Lady Wildcats kicked off their 2013 season in grand style here Friday, sweeping East Mississippi 5-4 and 10-2 (five innings) in MACJC non-division softball action.
            PRCC improved to 2-0 overall, while EMCC dropped to 2-2. The host Lady Lions swept Hinds earlier in the week in their season openers.
            In the first game, things were scoreless for the first two innings before East Miss scored a solo run in the bottom of the third. Pearl River tied it up in the top of the fourth, then added two runs in the top of the fifth and sixth frames to make it 5-1 after five-and-a-half.
            The Lady Lions cut The River’s lead to 5-3 with two in the bottom of the sixth then added a solo run in the seventh only to come up two runs shy of victory.
            Brittany LeBlanc (1-0) out of North Vermillion High in Maurice, La., got the win in going the distance on the mound, giving up 12 hits, striking out six, and walking three. EMCC starter Halie Green (1-1) got the loss in her five innings of action, giving up 11 hits, striking out two, and hitting a batter. Amelia LaVergne relieved in the sixth, giving up three hits and walking a batter.
            Micah Davis of Poplarville High and Whitney Waits of Oak Grove High paced PRCC’s 14-hit attack with three singles each, while Heather Boutwell of Oak Grove High, LeBlanc, and Courtney Warr out of Theodore High in Mobile, Ala., had two base hits a piece. Emily Jackson, another Theodore High recruit, and Kelsea Lewis of Oak Grove High both singled.
            East Mississippi finished with 11 hits, led by Charly Boswell with a double and two singles; while Jade Albritton doubled and singled. Meri Morgan Fortune, LaVergne, and Misty Richard had two base hits a piece, while Amber Spann singled.
            Both teams played error-free.
            In the nightcap game, Pearl River scattered 15 hits over the five-inning distance to take the win via the eight-run rule.
            The Lady Wildcats went up 1-0 in the top of the first before opening the floodgates with four runs in the top of the third. The Lady Lions answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame before PRCC blew it open with five in the top of the fourth.
            Neely McCrary (1-0) of Petal High got the win in going the distance, giving up nine hits, striking out two, and walking two.
            EMCC starter Cory Dawkins (1-1) got the loss in her two innings on the mound, giving up three hits and striking out three. Kendra Wilson relieved in the third and Tori Seymour in the fourth.
            Allie Flint out of Madison Central High led The River at the plate with three singles, while Jackson belted a home run and singled. Lewis doubled and singled, while McCrary, Waits, and Warr had two base hits a piece. Shannon Brown of Petal High doubled and Hillary Dickens of Picayune High singled.
            Dawkins had three base hits for EMCC, while Halie Green doubled and singled, Taylor Hackney had two singles, and Kendal Carpenter and Spann both had base hits.
            East Mississippi committed one error in the game to Pearl River’s none.
            Pearl River returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Faulkner State (Ala.) in a 4 p.m. doubleheader in Lady Wildcat Stadium in Poplarville for its 2013 home opener before traveling to MACJC non-division foe Meridian CC in Meridian Thursday for a 1 p.m. twin bill.
