Wildcats sweep Eagles

            RAYMOND — Eighth-ranked Pearl River swept Hinds in MACJC South Division doubleheader baseball action here Sunday with 12-10 and 6-1 victories.
            Sophomore slugger Krisjon Wilkerson belted two home runs and accounted for five RBIs in the nightcap win to propel the Wildcats to 21-7 overall and 5-3 division marks.
            Hinds, on the other hand, dropped to 11-13 and 2-4.
            In the opening game, PRCC went up 2-0 in the top of the first, but HCC answered with three in the bottom of the inning. The Wildcats tied it up in the top of the second and that stalemate remained intact until the bottom of the fourth when the host Eagles’ solo run made it 4-3.
            Pearl River went up for good in the top of the fifth with a three-run effort and scored six in the seventh. Hinds scored three runs in both the sixth and seventh frames only to come up three runs shy of victory.
            Wildcat starter Ryan Deemes (3-2), a Nicholls State (La.) signee out of Holy Cross High in Chalmette, La., got the win in his five-and-a-third innings on the mound. He gave up three hits, struck out three, and walked three; while Bradley Rayborn of Purvis High relieved in the sixth. Rayborn pitched a full inning, giving up three hits and walking one, while Southern Miss signee Christian Talley of Hancock County High retired the last two Hinds batters in the seventh.
            Starter Hunter Duvic went four innings for the Eagles, giving up four hits, striking out four, and walking five; while Jayme Monroe pitched one-third of the fifth, giving up a hit and walking a batter. Jake Chambliss relieved in the fifth and one-and-a-third, giving up four hits, while Mike Milton relieved in the sixth and walked a batter. Grady Thurman closed it out, giving up two hits.
            Nathan Pugh of Starkville High led Pearl River’s 11-hit effort with a home run and a double (four RBIs), while Paul Pickerrell out of John Hardin High in Elizabethtown, Ky. (three RBIs) and Wilkerson of St. Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis (three RBIs) both doubled and singled. Darius Knight of Pearl River had two base hits (one RBI), while Forrest Dungan of Columbia High, Ole Miss signee Braxton Lee of Picayune High, and Derek Martin of Poplarville High (one RBI) all singled.
            Hinds finished with six hits, led by Montana McDaniel (four RBIs), Justin Smith (one RBI), and Beau Wallace (one RBI) who all doubled; while Will Beardon, Brian Mills (one RBI), and Caleb Upton (one RBI) all had base hits.
            Each team committed four errors in the game.
            In the nightcap, Pearl River scored one in the first, two in the third, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth; while Hinds scored its only run in the bottom of the sixth.
            Starter Jake Brumfield (4-0) out of Adams Christian Academy in Natchez got the win in going the distance, giving up four hits, striking out nine, and walking one; while HCC starter Austin Hartzog got the loss in his five-and-two-thirds innings of action. He gave up 10 hits, struck out three, and walked three; while Kirk Thornton walked to batters in relief in the sixth with Kirk Kendrick also relieving in the sixth. He went one-and-a-third, struck out three, and walked one.
            Besides Wilkerson’s effort at the plate, Lee doubled and singled, and Dungan, Joe Kirkland of Moss Point High, Martin, Pickerrell, Pugh, and Andrew Wilkes of Pearl High all had base hits.
            Akiko Thompson had two singles for Hinds, while Mills, Upton, and Wallace all had base hits.
            PRCC committed three errors in the game to HCC’s two.
            Pearl River and Hinds eye a South Division doubleheader rematch Wednesday, April 17, with a 4 p.m. doubleheader in Poplarville.
            The River returns to action Tuesday when Meridian CC visits for a 5 p.m. doubleheader in Wildcat Stadium in Poplarville before division rival Jones County visits Friday for a 4 p.m. twin bill.
