Orientation - Online Library Catalog

To locate materials(books, magazines and journals, audiovisual materials, and computer programs) through the online library catalog from Pearl River's home page www.prcc.edu use the following steps:

  • Place cursor on Libraries and click on the box labled Garvin H. Johnston Library.
  • Click on Online Library Catalog link from the Libraries' Welcome page.
  • This will take you into the Online Catalog.
  • Type in your search.
  • Click on the drop down arrow located to the left of the search box to choose the appropriate search option.
  • Click on search button.

Example:

Words or Phrases - Primary and secondary sources
Author - Work by a specific author (ex. Steinbeck, John)
Title - Specific title (ex. The Grapes of Wrath)
Subject - Information about something (ex. Freedom of Speech)
Series - Specific series (ex. Modern Critical Interpretations)
Periodical Title - Specific journal or magazine (ex. Discover, Journal of Psychology, Time)
Once you have clicked on the appropriate search option your search results page should appear. This screen will tell you how many items were found for your search.

  • Click on the word details to see the item's record. This screen will include complete bibliographic information for the item. At the bottom of the screen is the location information, Garvin H. Johnston Library, Forrest County Center Library, or Hancock Center Library, how many copies of the item each campus has and the location within the library. eBooks will be indicated by the word Online in the location field.

GHJSTACKS (000 - 999 nonfiction) - books on the nonfiction shelves that may be checked out
GHJREFSTKS (R 000 - R 999 nonfiction ) - books on the reference shelves in reference stacks that may not be checked out
GHJFICSTKS (FIC A000 - FIC Z999 fiction) - books on the fiction shelves that may be checked out
GHJSHSTSTK (SC A000 - SC Z999 fiction) - books on the short story shelves that may be checked out
RESERVE (RESERVE 000 - RESERVE 999) - materials located at the Circulation Desk which may not leave the library
ONLINE (eBook) - books that can be read online
CHECKEDOUT or DATE DUE - material is checked out and will not be found on the shelves
GHJLAB (VC- video, C-cassette, CD ROM-computer file, etc.) - materials that must be used in the Learning Lab only

Students must have a valid PRCC ID in order to check out materials at any Pearl River Community College Library.

Orientation - The Magnolia Project

The Magnolia Project, Mississippi’s statewide consortium, is funded by the Mississippi Legislature. MAGNOLIA provides online databases for publicly funded K-12 schools, public libraries, community college libraries, and university libraries in Mississippi.

The databases provided through the Magnolia Project are

To find magazine and journal articles through EBSCOhost from the PRCC home page www.prcc.edu use the following steps:

  • Place cursor on Libraries and click on the box labled Garvin H. Johnston Library.
  • Click on the ONLINE RESOURCES button on the left side of the screen.
  • Click on The Magnolia Project link.
  • Click on the database or databases from the list on the left side of the screen that best fits your subject. (ex. Academic Search Elite-this is the most useful to the majority of college students)
  • The next screen will ask you for a password. Type in the appropriate password from the list above.
  • Again click on the database or databases from the list on the left side of the screen that best fits your subject. (ex. Academic Search Elite-this is the most useful to the majority of college students)
  • The next screen is your search screen, type in your subject. To retrieve the full text articles, make sure that you have clicked on the box marked Full Text and the box marked search within full text articles. If these boxes are not checked the database will pull up abstracts of articles. To obtain professional, scholarly (peer reviewed) journals, make sure that you have clicked on that box. After typing in your search and placing check marks in the boxes, click on search to retrieve your hits.

Note: Help on refining or broadening your search is available on each screen.

  • The next screen lists the articles or hits that the database found for your search. To see the full article click on the HTML Full Text or PDF Full Text links.
  • Below is a description of the databases that are most useful to college students.

Orientation - MELO

MELO (Mississippi Electronic Libraries Online) is an electronic environment that mirrors the traditionallibrary through online databases, electronic books and journals, and scholarly websites. It strives to collect, store and organize information on a broad range of subjects. By encouraging cooperative efforts of the Mississippi Community Colleges and by promoting economic delivery of information, MELO supports the needs and interests of students and faculty. Content for the collection is examined for its currency, usefulness and relevancy within the scope of appropriate academic materials. Selection considerations include appearance as to design, content, authority, and ease of accessibility.

To access MELO from the PRCC home page www.prcc.edu use the following steps:

  • Place cursor on Libraries and click on the box labled Garvin H. Johnston Library.
  • Click on the ONLINE RESOURCES button on the left side of the page.
  • Click on the MELO link. The Tutorial link under MELO is a very useful resource.
  • The next screen provides you the with links to the main subject heading through MELO.

    CINAHL/Nursing Journals

    Cummulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature Database with full-text articles, the definitive database for nursing and allied health research accompanied by ProQuest Nursing Journals, which provides complete full-text information from leading nursing and allied health magazines, journals, and dissertations.

    Password: WELCOME

    • Place cursor on Libraries and click on the box labled Garvin H. Johnston Library.
    • Click on the Online Resources lin on the left side of the screen.
    • Click on the CINAHL/Nursing Journals link.
    • Type in Login and Password
    • The basic search screen for CINAHL/Nursing Journals will appear.
    • To choose a Database, click on the drop down arrow on the right of the Databases box.
    • To narrow search by date, click on the drop down arrow on the Date Range box.
    • Place a check mark in the Full-text documents only and/or Scholarly journals including peer-reviewed to narrow search.
    • A list of hits will appear.

    Orientation - Opposing Viewpoints

    Gives "pro" and "con" arguments on controversial social issues. Includes full-text materials drawn from print series such as Opposing Viewpoints, Current Controversies, At Issue, Contemporary Issues Companion, and Gale Information Plus series. It also provides full-text periodicals, newspapers, journals, pamphlets, primary source documents, statistics, images, web sites, and student research tools.

    • Place cursor on Libraries and click on the box labled Garvin H. Johnston Library.
    • Click on the Online Resources link on the left side of the screen.
    • Click on the MELO link.
    • MELO's homepage will appear.
    • Click on the DATABASES/INDEXES link.
    • Click on Opposing Viewpoints on the right side of the screen.
    • Type in User Id: melo
    • Type in Password: facts
    • Click Proceed.
    • Scroll down the page and click on the Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center link.
    • The basic search screen for Opposing Viewpoints will appear.
    • Type in search or click on a subject from the list provided.
