POPLARVILLE - First-time students at Pearl River Community College will earn one semester hour of credit by completing a new on-line orientation program.New students who have completed admission requirements will receive letters this month providing them with their PRCC email address. Through email, they will receive their student identification numbers and instructions on completing on-line orientation. In the past, new students and their parents were required to come to the Poplarville campus for a half-day orientation session."When I started looking into it, this was the cutting_edge thing that institutions are doing across the nation," said Caycee Simon, PRCC assistant dean for student life. "The old traditional orientation was kind of information overload. The main reason they were there was to get their class schedule."The on-line orientation can be stopped and restarted at any point, she said."They can complete the module in stages," Simon said. "They can go back and revisit the information at any point during their college experience."The orientation program includes links to Cat Country Guide, PRCC''s student handbook, and to the Guide to River Living, the residence hall handbook.Orientation is mandatory for new students at all PRCC campuses.Parents can log on to the orientation program as guests."In the past, the students received one orientation and the parents received a separate orientation," Simon said. "With this, parents can just log in as a guest and see the exact same information."New students who have not yet registered will be given instructions for getting their email addresses through the Counseling Center in Crosby Hall. For more information, telephone 601 403-1197.
