Emergency Medical Technicians - EMT

As an EMT, you can provide basic out-of -hospital emergency care or Basic Life Support (BLS). Training consists of about 140 hours of education. You will learn how to assess a patient for injury or illness, administer CPR, control bleeding, maintain the airway passage, and prevent shock. You will be able to respond to respiratory, cardiac, and trauma emergencies. Your education will cover anatomy, physiology, muscular skeletal injury care, childbirth, Pediatric emergency care, applying splints and bandages, and moving and transporting patients.

To work in this field you must enroll and pass the EMT-Basic educational course. You will next become nationally certified once you pass the computer based exam to demonstrate your entry level competency. After you become nationally certified, you will need to apply for state certification, allowing you to practice in this field.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years old

  • Will need proof of the following:

    • Must have completed high school or obtained a GED

    • Must have a 16 or better on the ACT exam taken after October 1989 or a 12 if taken before October 1989
      OR
      Must score a 10 or better on the TABE test

    • (Will want a link here to get to the GED portion of the Website so they can see locations, time and phone number for the GED department)

    • Must have a current CPR for Healthcare Providers card

    • Must complete the application:

    • Hepatitis B vaccination started prior to clinical or ambulance run portion of the class.

    • Physically fit per physical examination by physician

Financial Aid

The EMT-Basic course is on the approved list of classes that the WIN Job Center will approve for WIA. WIA will help pay the cost of tuition, books academic, occupational, and graduate fee, and licensure exams. This is NOT a student loan and the money does not have to be repaid. WIA is open to students who are in a career or technical program.

  1. Social Security Card
  2. Picture ID
  3. ACT and or most current College Transcript
  4. Annual household income
  5. Proof that you have applied for PELL (If this applies)
  6. School schedule
  7. Acceptance letter from school- You can get this once you have turned in all necessary paperwork for registration in the class.
