Wildcats let big lead slip away in loss at Southwest

POPLARVILLE – For the first 25 minutes of playing time Thursday night, Pearl River Community College played a near-perfect game. From that point on, nothing went right.

The Wildcats let a 34-point lead get away from them in the second half, as Southwest Mississippi roared back to hand PRCC an 81-77 setback in men’s basketball action at Summit.

Pearl River suffered its first loss of the season, after nine wins to start the season, and evened its South Division record at 1-1; Southwest improved to 10-1 and 1-1.

Wildcats pull away late to get past Delgado

POPLARVILLE – If Pearl River Community College was looking to see how it handled adversity heading back into South Division play, the Wildcats certainly got what they were looking for Tuesday night against Delgado (La.).

The scrappy Dolphins, who only dressed six players, gave undefeated PRCC all it wanted before the Wildcats finally pulled away for a 77-69 victory at M.R. White Coliseum.

Freshman Eric Thornton Jr. (Jackson) scored a career-high 29 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, as the Wildcats improved to 9-0 for the season. Delgado dropped to 2-12.

Unbeaten Wildcats on track for outstanding season

POPLARVILLE – Although well over half of the schedule remains to be played, the Pearl River Community College men have reached the proverbial midpoint of the junior college basketball season – the long Christmas break – as the only undefeated team in the MACJC.

While acknowledging that there is a lot of basketball left to be played, Wildcat head coach Chris Oney likes the path his team has taken to its 7-0 record thus far.

“I’m excited about it,” said Oney, who is in his third season as the coach of the Wildcats.
