Co-Lin sweeps River

WESSON --- Pearl River’s Wildcats opened their MACJC South Division schedule here Thursday with a pair of one-run, extra-inning losses to Copiah-Lincoln’s Wolfpack.
CLCC was a 9-8 victor in the first eight inning contest, while the Wolves took an eight inning 2-1 win in the nightcap game to improve to 6-12 overall and 4-0 in division play. PRCC dropped to 11-9 and 0-2.
In the first game, Co-Lin went up 2-0 in the bottom of the third, but The River answered with in the top of the fourth and added three more in the fifth to take a 5-2 edge. The Wolves scored a solo run in the bottom of the frame, but the Wildcats added two more in the sixth to pad their lead to 7-3.
In the bottom of the inning, CLCC rallied back with three to cut PRCC’s lead to one, but the Wildcats added a solo run in the seventh before the Wolfpack’s two in the bottom of the frame knotted it up at 8-8 and send things into an extra inning.
Pearl River couldn’t produce a run in the top of the eighth, but Mitch Little led off the bottom of the inning with a walk off homer to ice the victory for the Wolves.
Reliever Wesley Watts (1-0) picked up the victory in his two innings on the mound, giving up two hits and walking a batter, while Steven Chisolm started and went four-and-a-third, giving up five hits, striking out four, and walking three. Casey Hurley was one-and-two-thirds of relief duty, giving up three hits.
Allen Cowart of Pascagoula High (1-2) got the loss in his one-third inning of relief duty, giving up a hit and walking a batter, while starter Philip Chandler of Stone County High went four-and-two-thirds, giving up six hits, striking out four, and walking two. Colton Lee of Pearl River Central High (one strikeout, two walks) and Jacob Taylor of Picayune High (four hits) both pitched an inning of relief.
Houston Davenport out of Thompson High in Birmingham, Ala., paced the Wildcats’ 13-hit effort with three singles (two RBIs), while Lamar Anthony of Vicksburg High, Jalen Haskin of Oak Grove High (one RBI), and Derek Martin of Poplarville High all had two base hits apiece. Zach O’Hern of Hancock County High doubled (two RBIs) and Deanzel Johnson out of Lanier High in Jackson (one RBI), Derrick Mount of Harrison Central High (one RBI), and Nathan Pugh of Starkville High all had singles.
Co-Lin finished with 12 hits, led by Watts with a double and two singles (one RBI), while Stevie Hubbard doubled and singled (three RBIs), Little homered (one RBI), and Philip Lott (one RBI), Dominic Savage, and Ryan Young (two RBIs) all had base hits.
The Wolfpack played error free, while the Wildcat committed one defensive miscue.
In the nightcap game, things were scoreless for the first three-and-a-half innings before CLCC went up 1-0 with a solo run in the bottom of the fourth. After a scoreless fifth, PRCC tied it up in the top of the sixth. After a scoreless seventh and top of the eighth, starter Luke McGee, an Ohio State transfer out of Wooster (Oh.) High walked a batter in the bottom of the frame and Little smashed a double to the left-center fence for the game-winning RBI.
Shane Brown (1-1) got the win in pitching the distance, giving up six hits, striking our four, and walking two, while McGee (2-2) got the loss. He also went the distance, giving up two hits, striking out eight, and walking five.
Mount paced the Wildcats’ six-hit attack with a double and a single (one RBI), while Pugh had two base hits and Anthony and O’Hern both singled.
Little doubled (one RBI) and Philip Lott singled for the Wolfpack.
Pearl River and Copiah-Lincoln eye a South Division rematch doubleheader set for Saturday, April 5 in Poplarville.
PRCC returns to action Saturday when it hosts MACJC South Division rival and No. 1-ranked Jones County in a 2 p.m. doubleheader in Wildcat Stadium in Poplarville.
