Hinds spoils Wildcats' home opener with dominant 35-7 victory

POPLARVILLE – Hinds Community College jumped all over Pearl River with two big pass plays in the first quarter and never looked back, as the Eagles defeated Pearl River 35-7 Thursday, spoiling the Wildcats’ 2015 home opener at Dobie Holden Stadium.

Hinds, ranked 15th in this week’s NJCAA poll, improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the South Division; PRCC dropped to 1-2 and 0-1.

The Eagles scored on pass plays of 29 yards to DeJarvis Chambers and 48 yards to Bryant McDuffie to grab a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

Hinds then added touchdown runs on 1 yard by quarterback Jaquez Parks and 3 yards by Tyus Raine in the second period to take a commanding 28-0 lead at halftime. The Eagles added a 1-yard scoring run by Brian King in the third quarter.

Pearl River scored a late touchdown on an 8-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Hinds made life miserable for Wildcat quarterback Mack Lowrie, who was sacked four times, and Lowrie was also victimized by a pair of fumbles on a bad snap and an errant pitch for a total of 63 yards in losses.

In all, the Eagles held the Wildcats to a net of 107 yards of offense, most of it coming from freshman tailback Darious Leggett, who rushed 10 times for 62 yards. On defense, sophomore Stevie Scott had a pair of interceptions for PRCC.

Pearl River will be back in action next Thursday, when it travels to Ellisville to face Jones County in the annual Cat Fight.
