POPLARVILLE – Pearl River Community College faded down the stretch Thursday night, dropping a 59-49 decision to Southwest Mississippi in women’s basketball action at Summit.
PRCC dropped to 6-3 overall and 0-2 in the South Division; Southwest improved to 10-1 and 1-1.
The Lady Wildcats battled from behind for most of the game, but stayed in the game until the final few minutes. Southwest owned a 10-9 lead after the first quarter and led 28-21 at halftime.
Southwest opened up a 35-24 lead, its largest lead of the game, midway through the third quarter, but Pearl River closed the period with an 11-2 run and trailed 37-35 heading into the final 10 minutes.
The two teams traded baskets through the first four minutes of the fourth quarter, and freshman Gabby Brown (Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.) hit a 3-point shot for PRCC with 5:40 to play that tied the game 47-47.
However, the Lady Wildcats went more than four minutes without scoring and the Lady Bears closed the game on a 10-2 run to seal the victory.
Sophomore Tyasia Willis (Camden) led Pearl River with 16 points, and grabbed seven rebounds. Rachel Thompson had 19 to lead Southwest.
Pearl River will battle Jones County in the first Cat Fight of the season Tuesday at Ellisville.
