kayley fountainAlthough there was nothing at stake except pride, the second Cat Fight of the season between Pearl River Community College and Jones County in women’s soccer was a typically hard-fought, exciting contest.

Freshman Kayley Fountain (Ocean Springs) scored with 1:10 to play in the first overtime to give the Lady Wildcats a 2-1 victory Tuesday night in the regular-season finale at the PRCC Sports Complex.

PRCC improved to 8-0-4 overall and finished second in the South Division at 5-0-3. The Lady Wildcats will host Northwest Mississippi at 5 p.m. next Tuesday in the first round of the MACJC playoffs.

JCJC (8-2-1, 6-1-1) had already clinched the division title and earned a bye to the State Tournament semifinals, scheduled for Oct. 28 at Ridgeland.

Pearl River jumped ahead at the 24:45 mark in the first half when sophomore Abbi Henderson (Leakesville) converted penalty kick after a foul was called on the Lady Bobcats in the 18-yard box.

The Lady Wildcats maintained the advantage until the 82nd minute, when Mikayla Banks scored for Jones on a pass from Judith Verdaguer.

PRCC, however, dominated in the overtime, getting three shots, all on goal, and the winner came at the 98:50 mark when Fountain took a pass in the center of the field from sophomore Mia Richardson (Pascagoula) and scored from 25 yards out.

Sophomore Karsen Gildea (Ocean Springs) had seven saves for PRCC.

In action this past Saturday, PRCC rolled over Southwest Mississippi 3-0.

The Lady Wildcats got goals from sophomores Rylee Foster (Ocean Springs), Caroline Grafe (Kiln) and Lacey Polderman (Picayune), with assists from sophomore Mellie Snyder (Leakesville), freshman Sarah Havens (Hurley) and Henderson.
