Lady Wildcats smother Gulf Coast in South Division triumph

POPLARVILLE – Pearl River Community College has hung its hat this season on team defense, and that defense was never better than in the first half Thursday night against Mississippi Gulf Coast.

The Lady Wildcats held the Lady Bulldogs scoreless in the second quarter while racing to a huge halftime lead, and were never threatened in a dominating 65-43 win in women’s basketball action at M.R. White Coliseum.

PRCC, which has won three of its last four games, improved to 9-4 overall and 3-3 in the South Division; Gulf Coast dropped to 5-9 and 0-6 with its sixth consecutive defeat.

Pearl River never trailed, opening the game with a 7-0 run. The Lady Bulldogs scored five unanswered points to close the margin to two points, but that was as close as it would get the rest of the way.

The Lady Wildcats led 18-10 after the first quarter, and steadily pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring Gulf Coast 16-0 in the period. MGCCC was 0 for 10 from the field in the second quarter, while PRCC hit three 3-point shots in the period and led 34-10 at halftime.

Sophomore Charisma Walker (Brandon) had another big game for Pearl River scoring 18 point and grabbing 7 rebounds.

Sophomore Adyn Strickland (Saucier) had her first double-double of the season, with 13 points and 11 rebounds, sophomore Rah Franklin (New Orleans) added 13 points and 8 rebounds, and sophomore Tyasia Willis (Camden) had 8 points and 9 rebounds.

Pearl River will continue its home stand on Saturday, hosting Coastal Alabama-Monroeville at 2 p.m., before returning to South Division play Monday at home against Copiah-Lincoln. The Co-Lin game will be livestreamed on prccmedia.com.
