Lady Wildcats suffer tough loss to Co-Lin in OT

POPLARVILLE – Pearl River Community College stood toe-to-toe with one of the perennial powers in the MACJC, but came up a little short in the end.

Copiah-Lincoln outscored the Lady Wildcats 10-5 in overtime to hand PRCC a 63-58 defeat in women’s basketball action Monday night at M.R. White Coliseum.

Pearl River dropped to 10-5 overall and 3-4 in the South Division. Co-Lin improved to 14-2 and 5-2.

Early in the game, it looked like the rout most people expected, as the Lady Wolves twice built a 10-point lead, at 13-3 and 18-8.

But a 3-point shot by sophomore Charisma Walker (Brandon) with 6:55 to play in the second quarter helped kick-start a 15-0 run by the Lady Wildcats that gave them a five-point lead.

PRCC led 26-23 at halftime, and continued its hot play into the third quarter, building an eight-point lead on a 3-pointer by redshirt sophomore Rah Franklin (New Orleans) with 7:20 to play in the period.

Co-Lin responded with a 10-0 run to regain the lead, and neither team led by more than three points through the rest of regulation.

Franklin tied it 53-53 on a 3-point shot with 11 seconds to play, and the Lady Wildcats prevented the Lady Wolves from getting a shot off in the remaining time.

However, Co-Lin hit a trey to start the overtime, and subsequently converted 5 of 6 foul shots to maintain the advantage.

Franklin broke out a long shooting slump by converting 6 of 13 shots from 3-point range to finish with 24 points, and she also had 7 rebounds. Sophomore Tyasia Willis (Camden) had 14 points and 8 rebounds, and Walker finished with 11 points and 9 rebounds.

The Lady Wildcats will begin the second round of division play on Thursday at Meridian. Pearl River will be back home next Monday to face Southwest. That game will be livestreamed on
