Lady Wildcats use big second half to get past Meridian

Pearl River sophomore guard Rah Franklin POPLARVILLE – Pearl River Community College came roaring out of the locker room for the second half to take command and cruised to a 62-52 victory over Meridian Thursday night in women’s basketball action at Meridian.

The Lady Wildcats (11-5 overall) are firmly in the race for a berth in the MACJC State Tournament at 4-4 in South Division play, with five wins in their last seven games. PRCC avenged an earlier defeat by the Lady Eagles (11-6, 4-4), who have lost four straight.

“Our girls have really embraced a blue-collar work ethic since we have come back from Christmas break,” said PRCC coach Scotty Fletcher.

“They are really buying into holding each other accountable, and their attention to detail has been critical for their confidence and ability to win close games.”

It was close through the first half, as the teams were tied 9-9 at the end of the first quarter and 26-26 at halftime.

But Pearl River took over in the third quarter, as sophomore Tyasia Willis (Camden) scored six of her 10 points in the period, which ended with the Lady Wildcats leading 49-34.

Meridian narrowed the margin in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Wildcats were 6 of 8 from the foul line in the final minute to secure the win. For the game, PRCC converted 12 of 15 free throws.

Redshirt sophomore Rah Franklin (New Orleans) had her second consecutive big game for Pearl River, with 18 points. Sophomore Charisma Walker (Brandon) added 13 points, and Willis pulled down 11 rebounds for her third double-double this season and the seventh of her career.

“Every South Division game is tough, and the kids have been playing extremely hard,” said Fletcher. “I couldn’t be more proud of such a fine group of young women to coach every day.”

The Lady Wildcats will have a two-game home stand next week, hosting Southwest on Monday and Jones County on Thursday. Both games tip off at 5:30 p.m. and both will be livestreamed on prccmedia.com.
