POPLARVILLE --- The MACJC-Region 23 champion Pearl River Wildcats wrapped its 2013 soccer season with an 8-1 NJCAA South District loss to second-ranked and Region 14 champ San Jacinto here Friday in Wildcat Stadium.
PRCC, which repeated as state-regional champs last Sunday with a 1-0 victory over Hinds in Raymond, finished 13-2 overall, while San Jacinto College improved to 17-1.
The visiting Coyotes based in Houston, Tex., flexed their muscle early when Jose Seoane banged in the game’s first goal in the 12th minute of the first half before Pearl River’s Justin Broussard of Ocean Springs High tied it up five minutes later with a penalty kick.
SJC answered by unleashing a scoring barrage of five straight goals. Joao Monteiro scored --- his first in the 19th minute and his second in the 41st minute. Call Casarez’s goal came in the 25th minute, while Pablo Vasquez’s came in the 31st to give the Coyotes a 6-1 lead at the intermission.
Vasquez added a second goal 10 minutes into the second half, while Oneal Moore ended the scoring four minutes later.
Despite the season-ending setback, third-year Wildcat coach Paul Martin lauded his team’s effort.
“You don’t want things to end like this, but we had a heckuva season,” he said. “Of course we were playing without the services of a top guy (Mike Allizzo), which greatly hampered us both offensively and defensively.
“But our guys should be proud. We set out to repeat as state and regional champions and we accomplished that. I’m proud of all of them.”
Allizzo, a two-year All-Region 23 sophomore forward out of Ocean Springs High, injured a hamstring late in The River’s win over Hinds in last Sunday’s title bout against Hinds.
With the victory, San Jacinto earned a berth in the NJCAA National Tournament set for Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Tex., Nov. 18-23.0
