Pearl River soccer squads open season with 8-0, 2-0 shutouts over Northwest

         POPLARVILLE --- Pearl River Community College’s reigning MACJC and Region 23 women’s and men’s soccer champions opened their 2013 season in grand style here Saturday with a pair of MACJC non-division shutouts over Northwest Mississippi in Wildcat Stadium.
            The Lady Wildcats pulled off a dominating 8-0 victory, while the River men were 2-0 winners. Both PRCC squads are now 1-0 on the year.
            In the women’s game, things were scoreless for the first 10 minutes before Kacy Mixon out of East Central High in Hurley put up the first goal with 35:18 left in the first half. At the 16:52 mark Chelsea Parsons of Biloxi High added a second goal, while Karley Mitchell of Poplarville High scored back-to-back goals at the 13:55 and 8:42 marks to make it 4-0 PRCC at the half.
            In the second half, Christina Gentry of Horn Lake High padded The River’s lead with two straight goals within a two-minute span (33:56, 32:01), while Brooke Blackledge of Northeast Jones High scored with 6:37 left to make it 7-0. Natalie Lechner of Pascagoula High scored the final goal of the contest with a header with 4:50 left.
            In the men’s game, the two teams battled to a scoreless stalemate at the intermission, but Dylan Garrett of Vancleave High put Pearl River up with a score at the 35:05 mark of the second half. Mike Allizzo of Ocean Springs High scored the game’s final goal with 21:56 left.
            PRCC’s women returns to action next weekend when they take on Darton (Fla.) on Friday at 2 p.m. and Brevard (Fla.) on Saturday at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at Mississippi Gulf Coast CC in Perkinston. Both Pearl River squads travel to Ridgeland to take on MACJC non-division host Holmes on Friday, Aug. 30, at 2 p.m. (women) and 4 p.m. (men).
