Pearl River splits with Co-Lin

            POPLARVILLE --- Pearl River’s Lady Wildcats split with Copiah-Lincoln in MACJC South Division softball doubleheader action here Saturday, falling 7-4 in the first game before bouncing back with a 3-2 victory in the nightcap.
            It took eight innings to decide the outcome of both games.
            PRCC is now 14-10 overall and 8-4 in division play, while the visiting Lady Wolfpack is 14-12 and 6-6.
            In the opening contest, the Lady Wildcats went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first when lead off Megan Scronce of Petal High doubled, moved the third off a sacrifice bunt by Heather Boutwell of Oak Grove High, and scored of a sacrifice fly to center by Kelsea Lewis of Oak Grove High.
            The River left the bases loaded in the bottom of the second. Kaci Lantrip of Terry High cracked a one-out single to right and Courtney Warr of Theodore (Ala.) High followed with a base on balls before Hannah Holloway of Petal High reached on a fielder’s choice. Allie Flint of Madison Central High singled to right field to load the corners, but the Lady Wolves retired Scronce with a pop-out to second.
            Co-Lin grabbed a 2-1 lead in the top of the third when Savannah Johnson smacked an RBI triple and scored scoring off Kayla Craft’s single. CLCC padded its lead to 3-1 in the fourth when Missy Romero led off with a base hit, but PRCC starter Rachel Hickman struck out two straight before giving up an RBI double to Craft, who was left stranded when Brooke Gonzales flew out to right.
            Lead off batters Warr and Holloway reached in the bottom of the frame before Flint bunted into a double play and Scronce fouled out to end the inning.
            The Lady Wolfpack went three up, three down in the top of the fifth, but the Lady Wildcats’ three in the bottom of the inning gave Pearl River a 4-3 edge. Lewis got things going with a one-out single down the third-base line and Emily Jackson of Theodore (Ala.) High cracked an RBI single to center an out later. Kaci Lantrip of Terry High scored Jackson with a double to tie it up and Warr’s double to left scored Lantrip to give PRCC a 4-3 edge before Holloway fouled out to end the inning.
            Copiah-Lincoln answered with a solo run in the sixth when lead off Hannah Roberts was hit by a pitch, moved to second two outs later, and scored off Kaitlin Cookey’s single before Craft flew to left for the final out. The River went three up, three down in the bottom of the inning.
            After a scoreless seventh, things went into an extra inning. With Beth Fortenberry perched at second, Romero’s lead off double made it 5-4 and Romero scored a sixth run an out later when Kacie Berry reached on an error. Berry scored the game’s final run when Craft reached on another Lady Wildcat error.
            Pearl River started the bottom of the frame with Jackson at second, but CLCC pitcher Brooke Gonzales retired Lantrip, Warr, and Holloway in succession to end the game.
            Gonzales (9-3) picked up the win in going the distance, giving up 10 hits, striking out three, and walking two, while Hickman (7-5) got the loss. She also pitched the distance, giving up seven hits, striking out four, and hitting a batter.
            Craft led the Lady Wolfpack at the plate with a pair of singles (one RBI), while Johnson tripled (one RBI), Romero doubled, and Cooksey (one RBI), Gonzales, and Breanna McKenzie all had base hits. Berry, Hannah Roberts, and Payton Sheffield all had RBIs for Co-Lin.
            Lantrip paced the Lady Wildcats with a double and a single (two RBIs), while Jackson (one RBI) and Warr (one RBI) both doubled. Scronce doubled and Flint, Holloway, and Lewis had base hits.
            PRCC committed three errors in the game to CLCC’s none.
            In the nightcap game, Pearl River went up 1-0 in the bottom of the second only to see Copiah-Lincoln take a 2-1 edge in the fourth. That one-run margin remained intact until the bottom of the seventh when the Lady Wildcats tied it up and sent things into an extra inning.
            The Lady Wolfpack couldn’t produce a run in the top of the eighth, but the Lady Wildcats iced the win in the bottom of the frame. With Hannah Herndon of Poplarville High at second, reliever Rheagan Welch retired lead off Lewis before loading the bases with intentional walks of Lantrip and Brooke Roberts. Becky Mitchell’s ensuing bunt saw the Pearl River Central recruit score Herndon from third to take the win.
            Hickman (8-5) picked up the win, despite pitching only the eighth and striking out one. Ashley Hawkins of Theodore (Ala.) High started and went seven innings, giving up four hits and walking four.
            Gonzales (8-4) got the loss after relieving in the seventh, giving up two hits and two walks, while starter Rheagan Welch pitched the first six-and-a-third, giving up five hits, striking out one, and walking three.
            Roberts had two singles for CLCC, while Brooke Laigast and McKenzie (one RBI) both doubled. Romero also had an RBI for the Lady Wolves.
            Boutwell and Scronce paced PRCC with two singles each, while Lantrip, Mitchell (one RBI), and Roberts all had base hits.
            Co-Lin committed two errors in the game to Pearl River’s one.
The Lady Wildcats and Lady Wolves eye a South Division rematch Monday, April 14 (3 p.m. doubleheader) in Wesson.
Pearl River returns to action Tuesday when it travels to South Division rival East Central for a 3 p.m. doubleheader before hosting division foe Southwest Mississippi Friday in a 4 p.m. twin bill.
