Pearl River teams falter in South Division clash against Southwest

POPLARVILLE – Pearl River Community College suffered a big setback Thursday night, dropping a South Division basketball doubleheader against Southwest at Marvin R. White Coliseum.

The shorthanded Lady Wildcats gave a valiant effort, but their upset bid fell just short in a 46-44 loss, and the Wildcats succumbed to a 3-point barrage in a 75-67 defeat, falling out of a tie for the division lead.

PRCC’s women were already undermanned, with freshmen Jessica Wilson (mononucleosis) and Shelanita Starks (concussion) out of action and not in uniform, then they lost reserve guard Jada Ivy to a knee injury in the first quarter.

Even with just six players available, though, the Lady Wildcats fought through foul trouble to push the Lady Bears to the edge.

PRCC overcame a 39-31 deficit early in the fourth quarter, and tied the game 43-43 on a layup by Tiara Warren with 35.5 seconds to play. But Gabreilla Cortez scored on a layup with 15.8 seconds to play that put Southwest ahead for good.

Shaniqua Magee had 10 points to lead Pearl River (6-10 overall, 3-5 division). Cortez had 20 points to lead Southwest (14-3, 6-2).

In the men’s game, the Bears hit Pearl River with a jaw-dropping display of long-range shooting, converting 5 of their first 6 shots from beyond the arc, and 8 of 18 in the first half.

Nevertheless, the Wildcats used an 11-0 run to grab a 22-19 lead midway through the first half. But the Bears swished three treys in a 12-2 surge that gave them the momentum, and they never trailed the rest of the way.

Southwest led 38-28 at halftime, and fended off several runs by PRCC, including an 11-0 run that closed the margin to 52-50 midway through the second half. But that was as close as the Wildcats would get.

Darryln Willis had 24 points and 12 rebounds – both game highs – to lead Pearl River (11-6, 5-3), and Cortez Mitchell added 15 points for the Wildcats. Lafayette Rutledge had 21 points and Terrell Miller added 19 points to lead Southwest (10-6, 5-3).

PRCC will be back in action Monday against Copiah-Lincoln, then the Wildcats and Lady Wildcats will be home next Thursday against Hinds.
