POPLARVILLE – Pearl River Community College guard Eric Thornton Jr. saw his outstanding play last week rewarded on Tuesday as he was named MACJC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.
Thornton, a freshman from Jackson Murrah, is the first Wildcat to earn the honor this season. He was selected in voting by sports information departments from the state’s community colleges.
Thornton led the Wildcats to a pair of key South Division triumphs last week. He had 34 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists on Thursday in a 92-73 win over Hinds at Poplarville, and had 21 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals in PRCC’s 74-73 win at Jones County on Saturday.
Just for good measure, he had 22 points and 8 rebounds Monday night in a 77-65 win at East Central that propelled the Wildcats (12-1 overall, 4-1 division) into a tie with Copiah-Lincoln for first place in the South Division.
For the season, Thornton is averaging 21.0 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.
PRCC returns to action Thursday night at M.R. White Coliseum taking on Mississippi Gulf Coast.
