PRCC pitching prevails in doubleheader sweep

Pearl River Community College used a pair of standout pitching performances to cruise past Alabama Southern in a pair of wins Saturday in junior college softball at Wildcat Stadium.

Freshman Olivia Holley pitched a five-inning shutout as the Wildcats won the opener 9-0, then sophomore Jackie Shows hurled a two-hitter as PRCC completed the sweep in a 4-0 win in the nightcap.

Pearl River improved to 6-4 overall; Alabama Southern dropped to 2-16.

The Wildcats jumped on Eagles starter Laura Turchiano (1-7) for four unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning, and kept the pedal to the metal, adding three runs in the second and a run each in the third and fourth innings.

With two outs and the bases loaded in the first, freshman Kiersten Stanford’s tailing flyball to rightfield was dropped, allowing all three runners to score, and freshman Bailey Street made it 4-0 with a single.

Sophomore Brook Barnes and Holley had RBI singles in the second, and a double steal plated the third run in the inning.

Holley (2-0) scattered five hits in five innings, three coming in the fourth, as the Eagles loaded the bases. However, Holley got a groundball out to end the threat, and she retired the side in order in the fifth.

In the nightcap, Shows and ASCC starter Ryleigh Eddins (1-2) matched zeroes for the first 3½ innings, but in the bottom of the fourth, the Wildcats broke through for all four of their runs.

Freshman Krista Robles led off the inning with a single, and freshman Ramee Taylor sacrificed her to second. Freshman Rylee Dawsey drove in the first run with a single, taking second on the throw to the plate.

Kristen Martin moved Dawsey over to third with a groundout to first base, and sophomore Katie Perry made it 2-0 with a triple down the rightfield line.

Sarah Depperschmidt singled Perry home, and Depperschmidt scored on an infield hit and throwing error off the bat of Anna Grace Cooley.

Shows (2-2) went the distance, striking out two and walking two.

Pearl River make a return trip to Alabama Southern next Saturday in a 1 p.m. doubleheader, then the Wildcats open MACJC play on March 7 at home against fifth-ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast.
