PRCC softball gets back on track with doubleheader sweep over Hinds

POPLARVILLE – The Pearl River Community College softball team got its offense back in gear in a big way, snapping a four-game losing streak by sweeping an MACJC doubleheader against Hinds Tuesday at Wildcat Stadium.

The Wildcats rolled to a 9-1 win in the opener in five innings, then defeated the Eagles 10-2 in the nightcap in six innings.

PRCC took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of the opener on Kristen Martin’s RBI double, but Hinds tied it up in the top of the fourth on Di’Mon Brown’s leadoff home run.

But the Wildcats broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the fourth, helped by three Eagle errors. Mary Grace Key’s three-run double was the big blow in the rally.

Pearl River closed out the game in the bottom of the fifth, as Alyssa Croncich had a two-run homer, and an error deep rightfield off the bat of Key gave the Wildcats the eight-run margin needed to end the game on the mercy rule.

Skyler Cook (10-5) allowed three hits, struck out one and walked two. Amberlee Nix (2-7) took the loss for Hinds.

The Wildcats (17-12 overall, 7-7 conference) continued their onslaught in the nightcap, rapping out 11 hits.

PRCC spotted the Eagles a run in the top of the first inning, then scored three runs on three hits, including run-scoring singles by Branda Northrop and Shay Rosser, then added three more runs in the third, helped by a pair of errors. Katie Davis had a two-run double in the inning.

The Wildcats ended it with four runs in the sixth. Martin had a run-scoring single, and Pearl River scored two runs on bases-loaded walks and a passed ball that allowed the clinching run to score.

Amanda Ingram (6-6) scattered six hits, striking out two and walking one. Meagan Duchesne (2-2) was the losing pitcher for Hinds (8-19-1, 5-9).

PRCC will be right back in action at home at 3 p.m. Wednesday to make up a doubleheader against Coahoma that was postponed from earlier this season.
