PRCC splits at SMCC

SUMMIT --- Pearl River’s Wildcats pulled off a 2-0, 11-inning marathon victory over Southwest Mississippi in the first game of an MACJC South Division doubleheader here Wednesday, but the host Bears bounced back with an 8-6 win in the nightcap game.
PRCC is now 16-12 overall and 3-5 in division play, while SMCC is 11-13 and 5-5.
In the opening game, the two teams battled through 10 scoreless innings until the Wildcats scored two runs in the top of the 11th to take the hard-fought victory.
In the 11th, River lead off batter Kyle Dolan of Forrest County AHS reached after getting belted by a pitch by reliever Brady Badon and moved to second off a sacrifice by Jacob Taylor of Picayune High before scoring off a double by Jalen Haskin of Oak Grove High.
Haskin moved to third off a fly out by Tracy Hadley of Pascagoula High then Justin Demary of Iowa (La.) High was hit by a pitch, stole second, and Haskin scored off a single by Lamar Anthony of Vicksburg High. The Bears left two runners stranded in the bottom of the frame --- both hit by pitches --- with reliever Demary retiring Patric Devlin for the final out.
Demary (1-1) picked up the win after relieving in the ninth, pitching the final two-and-a-third innings, giving up a hit, and walking a batter. Starter Philip Chandler of Stone County High went five frames, gave up three hits, struck out three, and walked one, while Colton Lee of Pearl River Central High pitched one-and-two-thirds of relief, striking out three. Luke McGee, a Ohio State transfer who prepped at Wooster (Oh.) High, relieved for one-and-a-third, giving up a hit, striking out one, and walking one, while Taylor pitched two-thirds of an inning, recording a strike out.
Badon (2-1) got the loss in his 3.2 innings of relief, pitching three-and-two-thirds, giving up four hits, striking out four, and walking one. Starter Cliff Hurst went seven-and-a-third, giving up four hits, striking out five, and walking three.
Haskin paced the Wildcats’ eight-hit attack with three singles (one RBI), while Derrick Mount of Harrison Central High doubled and single, Anthony has two base hits (one RBI), and Tracy Hadley of Pascagoula High singled.
The Bears finished with four hits, all singles by Collin Carroll, Devlin, Andrew Hulbert, and Austin Knight.
Both teams committed two errors each in the contest.
In the nightcap, Southwest went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first before pelting The River with six runs in the second to go up 7-0. The Wildcats answered with three in the top of the third before the Bears padded their lead to 8-3 in the bottom of the frame.
That score remained intact until the top of the seventh when PRCC cut SMCC’s lead to two.
Darien Brown of Hattiesburg High led off with a double, Anthony followed with a walk, and Mount doubled to score Brown. With Anthony at third, Nathan Pugh of Starkville High belted an RBI single to make it 8-5. Mount eventually scored the game’s final run on a passed ball before Deanzel Johnson out of Lanier High in Jackson, Garren Berry of Petal High, and Taylor struck out in succession to end the game.
Bear starter Jacob Savoy (1-0) picked up the win in his three innings on the mound, giving up two hits, striking out one, and walking one, while Chase Ladd pitched three innings of relief, giving up five hits, striking out two, and walking two. Jade Whitten relieved for a third of an inning, giving up a hit and striking out one and J.D. Stockstill two-thirds, striking out two.
Trevor Bennett of Hancock County High (1-1) got the loss in his one-and-two-thirds innings on the mound, giving up four hits, striking out one, and walking four, while McGee pitched two-and-a-third, striking out two, Lee one-and-a-third, striking out two, and Allen Cowart of Pascagoula High two-thirds of a frame, giving up four hits and walking one.
Mount led the Wildcats’ eight-hit effort with two doubles (two RBIs), while Brown doubled and singled, Pugh had two base hits (two RBIs), and Anthony and Kreg Garner of Northwest Rankin High both singled.
The Bears finished with 10 hits, led by Trent Gory with a double and a single (one RBI), while Logan Ferrell had two singles, Kentric Hodges doubled (two RBIs), and Carroll, Devlin (one RBI), Anthony Durr (one RBI), Knight (one RBI), and Trey Wynn (one RBI) all had base hits.
Pearl River committed three errors in the game to Southwest’s one.
PRCC and SMCC eye a South Division rematch set for Friday, April 18 (2 p.m. doubleheader) in Wildcat Stadium in Poplarville.
The Wildcats return to action Saturday when South Division foe Hinds plays host with a 2 p.m. doubleheader in Raymond before returning home to host division rival Mississippi Gulf Coast Tuesday with a 4 p.m. twin bill.
