Reigning MACJC-Region 23 champion River men, women defend titles this weekend

POPLARVILLE --- Pearl River Community College’s women’s and men’s soccer squads --- the reigning MACJC-Region 23 champions --- defend their prestigious titles this weekend in the MACJC-Region 23 Tournament set for Saturday and Sunday on Tom Shepherd Field on the campus of Hinds CC in Raymond.
The South No. 2 Lady Wildcats (13-2) face the North No. 1 Hinds Lady Eagles (6-8-2) in the semi-final round Saturday at 10:30 a.m., while the South No. 1 Wildcats (11-1) tackle South No. 2 Jones County (12-3-1) at 1 p.m.
Both PRCC squads posted wins in the regular season over their Saturday foes. On Oct. 2, the Lady ’Cats were 4-1 winners over Hinds, while the Wildcats swept JCJC in both of their division battles with 4-2 (Sept. 6) and 3-1 (Oct. 8) victories.
Other Saturday semi-final games include the South No. 3 Mississippi Gulf Coast women (8-6-1) facing South No. 1 Jones County (15-1) at 3:30 p.m., followed by the North No. 2 Itawamba men (9-2-2) versus North No. 1 Hinds (6-7-4) at 6 p.m.
Sunday’s championship round kicks off with the Saturday women’s winners facing off at 1:30 p.m., followed by the men’s title bout at 4 p.m.
Jack Byrd is amidst his fifth season as head coach of the PRCC women’s squad, while Paul Martin is head coach of the men’s team for the third straight season.
