River men smack Delta in MACJC Tournament

WESSON --- Pearl River and Mississippi Gulf Coast will lock horns for a third time this basketball season, as the archrival duo face off here Wednesday in Graydon L. Mullin Coliseum on the campus of Copiah-Lincoln Community College in the MACJC State Tournament men’s semi-finals.
No. 24-ranked PRCC, the South Division’s No. 1 seed, improved to 21-3 overall with its 70-61 quarter-final victory over North No. 4 Mississippi Delta (10-13), while South No. 3 MGCCC (14-10) smacked North No. 2 East Mississippi (17-7) 78-74 in the opening round.
The Wildcats and Bulldogs split during regular season play with The River falling to the host Bulldogs 80-79 Jan. 20 in Perkinston, while PRCC avenged the setback with a 72-63 win Feb. 9 in Poplarville.
Against the MDCC, the Trojan led the contest for the first nine minutes, but Pearl River’s Dontellius Ross of Callaway High banged in a three at the 10:45 mark to give the Wildcats a 22-20 edge --- their first of the game. Delta immediately tied it up and regained the lead off an Octavious Stimage bucket before PRCC went up 25-24 and never looked back.
From that point, the Wildcats outscored the Trojans 14-10 to head to the locker room up 39-34 at the intermission.
Pearl River opened the second half with an 8-2 scoring run to build its lead to double digits --- 47-36 --- with 15:30 left. Delta managed to cut the lead to 56-51 at the 7:36 mark, but the Wildcats answered with a 12-4 surge to build its lead to 13 --- their largest of the game --- with 2:08 left.
Zamarius Griffin paced the Trojans with 16 points (five assists, two treys), while Darius Dukes scored 13 (four treys), Travon Harper (four rebounds) and Tyrone McNeese (three assists), 10 each, Ondarius Hamlin eight (six rebounds), and Jaylen Ford and Stimage (four rebounds), two each.
William Brown of Forest Hill High led the Wildcats with a game-high 17 points (five assists, four rebounds), while Darral Willis of Madison Memorial (Wis.) High added 16 (five rebounds, two blocked shots), Cortez Mitchell of Callaway High 12 (seven rebounds, three steals, two treys), John Cornish of Olive Branch High 10 (two treys), Ross six (eight assists, two treys), Jamond Franklin of St. Martin High four, Malik Clements of Madison West (Wis.) High three, and Teddy Scott of Provine High two.
Pearl River hit an impressive 52.8 percent (28 of 53) from the field to Mississippi Delta’s 46.2 percent (24 of 52), while the Wildcats were eight of 21 (38.1 percent) from three-point range to the Trojans’ seven-of-16 (43.8 percent) effort. PRCC hit 60 percent (six of 10) at the foul line, while MDCC was six of 12 (50 percent).
The River led on the boards with 31 rebounds (eight offensive, 23 defensive) to Delta’s 26 (seven offensive, 19 defensive), while the Wildcats committed seven turnovers to the Trojans’ 10.
Pearl River swept Mississippi Delta during the regular season taking a 55-52 win Nov. 13 in Poplarville and a 78-62 victory Jan. 8 in Moorhead.
In other quarter-final action, North No. 1 Holmes defeated South No. 4 East Central 62-59 in overtime, and North No. 3 Northeast Miss. surprised South No. 2 and nationally-ranked Jones County 67-62.
In the women’s quarter-finals played Monday, South No. 1 Copiah-Lincoln smacked North No. 4 East Mississippi 71-48, South No. 3 Jones County crushed North No. 2 Northwest Mississippi 91-71, South No. 4 Meridian nipped North No. 1 Itawamba 76-74, and South No. 2 East Central defeated North No. 3 Holmes 90-69.
Wednesday’s women’s semi-final action gets underway with Co-Lin facing Jones County and 1 p.m., while Meridian tackles East Central at 6 p.m. Holmes faces Northeast Miss. at 2:45 p.m. in the men’s semis, while the Pearl River-Gulf Coast match up is set for 7:45 p.m.
