River opens South Division play with road victories over Hinds

            UTICA --- Pearl River Community College opened MACJC South Division basketball play here Thursday with a pair of convincing women’s and men’s victories --- each by a whopping 26 points --- over Hinds.
            The Lady Wildcat squad took a 76-50 win to improve to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in division play, while the Wildcats were 85-59 winners to remain unbeaten at 8-0 and 1-0. The host Lady Bulldogs remain winless at 0-7 and 0-1, while the Bulldog team dropped to 1-6 and 0-1.
            In the women’s game, the Lady Wildcats led 34-23 at the break before outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 42-27 in the second half to take the lopsided 26-point win.
            Kalisha Washington out of Murrah High in Jackson paced PRCC with a game-high 16 points (four rebounds, four assists), while Essence Pulliam out of Forest Hill High in Jackson scored 13 (four rebounds), Deandra Darjean, a Prairie View A&M transfer who prepped at Yates High in Houston, Tex., 11, Vamikka Smith out of Murphy High in Mobile, Ala., eight, Shanta’ Echols of Sumrall High seven, Iesha Dixon of Hinds AHS six, Kaci Sisson of Quitman High five, Tiana Dampeer of Lawrence County High and Tamera Williams of Hinds AHS (four assists), three each, and Tamesha Horne of Taylorsville High and Skyiesha Moss of Quitman High, two each.
            Latorya Richmond led Hinds with 15 points, followed by Rajee McDonald with 14, Breanna Newton eight, Delania Wilson six, Alisha Guynes five, and Taneshia Harris two.
            Pearl River hit 49.1 percent (26 of 53) from the field to Hinds’ 29.3 percent (17 of 58), while the Lady Wildcats were one of nine (11.1 percent) from three-point range to the Lady Bulldogs’ zero-of-eight effort. At the foul line, PRCC was 23 of 38 (60.5 percent), while HCC was 16 of 24 (66 percent).
            In the men’s game, The River led 41-23 at the break, and then outscored the Bulldogs 44-36 in the second half to take the 26-point victory.
            Lester Crosby of Franklinton (La.) High paced PRCC with 23 points, both game and career highs, while Quintarius Porter out of Forest Hill High in Jackson added 12, Bryant McGee of West Marion High 13 (seven rebounds), Irishma Bowie of Morton High (two treys), Southeastern Louisiana signee DeAngelo Coleman out of South Pike High (six rebounds), and Troy State (Ala.) signee Jeremy Hollimon out of Gulfport High (two treys, eight a piece, Louisiana-Monroe signee Rakeem Esco of Canton High five (six assists), Kaven Bernard out of Assumption High in Napoleonville, La., four, and Sullivan Bell of Picayune Memorial High (six rebounds) and Devontai Foye of Hattiesburg High, two each.
            Kaleb Williams led Hinds with 15 points, while Victor Price scored 11, Clayton Tate nine, JaVorian Lawrence and Rod Taylor, six each, Derrick Little five, Marvin Brown four, and LaDarrius Drain, Benito Marshall, Dela Mayers, and Edward Walker, two a piece.
            Pearl River hit an impressive 56.9 percent (33 of 58) from the field to Hinds’ 34.4 percent (21 of 61), while the Wildcats were seven of 16 (43.8 percent) from three-point range to the Bulldogs’ seven-of-24 (29.2 percent) effort. At the foul line, PRCC was 12 of 20 (60 percent), while HCC was 10 of 16 (62.5 percent).
PRCC's women and men host MACJC South Division foe East Central Monday with 5 p.m. (women) and 7 p.m. (men) contests in Shivers Gymnasium in Poplarville, while the Lady Wildcats wrap their pre-Christmas portion of their schedule when they host Keesler Air Force Base Saturday, Dec. 14.
