River pulls off impressive five-game softball sweep at Faulkner Tournament

            GULF SHORES, Ala. --- Pearl River’s Lady Wildcats pulled off an impressive five-game sweep here Friday and Saturday in the Faulkner Tournament.
            On Friday, PRCC defeated host Faulkner State (Ala.) 10-0 and Wallace-Hanceville (Ala.) 3-0 before following on Saturday with victories over Gadsden State (Ala.) 1-0, Wallace-Dothan (Ala.) 6-2, and Enterprise State (Ala.) 13-0 in five innings to improve to 10-5 overall.
            In opening-round action against FSCC, the first two innings were scoreless before Lady Wildcats went up 1-0 in the top of the third when Mary Grace Key out of Leake Academy belted a one-out single and scored an out later off a base hit by Brooke Roberts of St. Amant (La.) High.
            That one-run edge remained intact until the top of the seventh when The River floodgates opened with a whopping nine runs. In the inning, a total of 13 batters stood in the box producing seven base hits, a walk, and a hit batter, while one reached on an error.
            Skylar Cook (3-2) of St. Amant (La.) High got the win in going the distance, pitching a three-hitter, striking out five, walking two, and hitting a batter, while Kaylyn Ingram (5-8) got the loss. She also pitched the distance, giving up 14 hits, striking out four, walking two, and hitting a batter.
            Key paced the Lady Wildcats at the plate with a triple and three singles (one RBI), while Hannah Holloway of Petal High (one RBI), Branda Northrop of Poplarville High (one RBI), and Roberts (one RBI) had two base hits apiece. Danielle Barton of Harrison Central High (one RBI), Cook (one RBI), Breanna Herndon of Poplarville High, and Briana Leonard of John Curtis Christian (La.) High, all had singles.
            Haley Nichols had two base hits and Makayla Reid singled for Faulkner, which committed three errors in the game to Pearl River’s one.
            Against Wallace-Hanceville, the Lady Wildcats went up 2-0 in the bottom of the first and added the game’s final run in the sixth.
            Rachel Hickman (2-2) of Poplarville High got the win in going the distance, giving up seven hits and striking out six, while W-H starter Rachel Ragland (6-5) got the loss. She also pitched the distance, giving up six hits, striking out nine, and walking one.
            Mackenzie Hill led W-H at the plate with two singles, while Ragland doubled and Molli Gorcia, Brooke Kinsey, Katie Parr, and Sam Riley all had base hits.
            Hickman doubled and singled (one RBI) to pace Pearl River’s offensive effort, while Katie Davis of D’Iberville High had two base hits (one RBI), Holloway doubled (one RBI), and Roberts singled.
            Wallace-Hanceville had two errors in the contest to PRCC’s one.
            The River opened its Saturday play with its 1-0 win over Gadsden State, scoring the contest’s only run in the bottom of the fifth when lead off Breanna Herndon was hit by a pitch and scored two outs later off Roberts’ base hit.
            Hickman (3-2) picked up the win, pitching a one-hitter in going the distance and striking out 11 and walking one. GSCC starter Karlee Brown (2-6) got the loss in pitching the distance, giving up eight hits, striking out four, and hitting a batter.
            Chandler Harden singled for Gadsden State, while Barton, Davis, and Breanna Herndon paced the Lady Wildcats with two singles apiece, while Roberts (one RBI) and Key both had base hits.
            PRCC committed an error in the game, while GSCC played error free.
            In the following game, Wallace-Dothan went up 2-0 in the top of the third, but Pearl River put up six in the bottom of the fifth to take the win.
            In that offensive surge, Leonard doubled and Breanna Herndon, Holloway, Roberts, Shay Rosser of D’Iberville High, and Jazmin Thomas of Lawrence County High cracked base hits. Davis also reached on an error.
            Starter Cook (4-2) got the win in going the distance, giving up five hits, striking out four, and walking three, while W-D starter Shannon Lord (1-5) also pitched the distance in taking the loss. She gave up 10 hits and struck out four.
            Jessica Helms led Wallace-Dothan at the plate with a triple and a single, while Ally Millender doubled, and Makala Kelley and Nicole Migliori (two RBIs) both had base hits.
            Davis (two RBIs) and Rosser had two singles each for the Lady Wildcats, while Leonard doubled (one RBI), and Breanna Herndon, Holloway (two RBIs), Key, Roberts (one RBI), and Thomas had base hits.
            PRCC played error free, while W-D had three defensive miscues.
            Against Enterprise State in The River’s final tournament game, it was all Lady Wildcats from the outset.
            PRCC went up 6-0 in the bottom of the first off Thomas’ triple, singles by Alyssa Croncich of D’Iberville High, Breanna Herndon, Roberts, and Rosser, while Hickman reached on an error and Barton and Breanna Herndon were belted by a pitches.
            The Lady Wildcats padded its lead by two in the second when lead off Holloway reached on an error, Roberts walked, Davis reached on an error, and Thomas singled, then added five more in the third.
            In that frame, Barton, Davis, Breanna Herndon, Hickman, Holloway, Roberts, and Thomas had base hits, while Herndon also reached on an error.
            After a scoreless fourth inning, ESCC went three up, three down in the fifth and the game was over via the eight-run rule.
            Starter Barton (1-1) got the win in hurling the five-inning distance, giving up a meager two hits, striking out five, and walking two, while Enterprise State starter Chelbie Fuller got the loss in her two-and-one-third innings of action, giving up 12 hits, striking out one, walking one, and hitting two batters. Alyssa Cover relieved in the third, giving up a hit and striking out three.
            Kelli McIntosh had two base hits for ESCC, while Thomas paced the Lady Wildcats’ 13-hit attack with a triple and two singles (four RBIs), while Breanna Herndon and Roberts (three RBIs) had two singles each, and Barton (one RBI), Croncich (one RBI), Davis (two RBIs), Hickman, Holloway (one RBI), and Rosser all had base hits.
            Enterprise State committed a whopping six errors in the game, while Pearl River played error free.
The Lady Wildcats resume action when it hosts MACJC non-division rival Holmes in a 3 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday in Wildcat Stadium in Poplarville before opening South Division play Friday at home against Southwest Mississippi with a 3 p.m. twin bill.
