River snaps eight-game losing skid with dominating victories over Baton Rouge 11-6, 11-7

BATON ROUGE, La. --- The Pearl River Wildcats snapped an eight-game losing streak here Tuesday with a dominating 11-6 and 11-7 doubleheader sweep over Baton Rouge (La.).
PRCC smacked a combined 26 hits in the twin bill to improve to 13-11 overall, while BRCC dropped to 11-19. Thursday’s victories marked The River’s second sweep of the year over the Bears, as the Wildcats were 4-1 and 9-1 winners on Feb. 8 at the Concordia Recreation District Complex in Vidalia, La.
In the first game, Pearl River went up 1-0 in the top of the first inning then padded its lead to 6-0 in the third before Baton Rouge scored its first run of the contest in the bottom of the fourth. The Wildcats five-run barrage in the sixth pumped their lead to 11-1, but the Bears bounced back with four in the bottom of the frame and added a solo run in the seventh only to come up six runs shy of victory.
Starter Philip Chandler of Stone County High (3-0) picked up the win in his four-and-a-third innings on the mound, giving up three hits, striking out five, and walking three. Trey Grice of Forrest County AHS saw two-thirds of an inning of relief duty, giving up three hits and walking two, while LeDarien Lee of FCAHS pitched a third, striking out one and walking one, Carlos Lott of Pascagoula High one inning, giving up two hits and striking out two, and Justin Demary of Iowa (La.) High a third, striking out one.
Bear starter Kelby Blalock (2-2) got the loss, pitching two-and-two-thirds, giving up six hits and striking out one. Relievers included Andrew Liotta, one inning, five hits, one walk, Jacob Saisan, two-and-a-third, two hits, four strikeouts, and Brodie Browning, one inning, two hits, and a strikeout.
Lamar Anthony of Vicksburg High paced the Wildcats’ 15-hit attack with a double and two singles (one RBI), while Jalen Haskin of Oak Grove High homered and singled (two RBIs), Kreg Garner of Northwest Rankin High, Tracy Hadley of Pascagoula High, and Nathan Pugh of Starkville High (two RBIs), two base hits apiece, and Darien Brown of Hattiesburg High, Kyle Dolan of FCAHS, Derrick Mount of Harrison Central High (one RBI), and Jacob Taylor of Picayune High (one RBI), one single apiece.
BRCC finished with eight hits, led by Christopher White’s two singles, while Zach Zimmer tripled, Mark Traylor doubled, and Darren Bueche (one RBI), Jose Dupuy, Adam LeBlanc (one RBI), and Blake Miesner all had base hits.
The Wildcats committed one error to the Bear’s two in the game.
In the nightcap, the first inning was scoreless, but Pearl River put up four in the top of the second. That 4-0 advantage remained intact until the fourth when the Wildcats padded their lead to 7-0 before Baton Rouge scored its first run in the bottom of the frame.
After PRCC pushed its lead to 8-1 in the fifth, BRCC bounced back with a four-run barrage in the bottom of the inning to cut the Wildcats’ lead to 8-5. Pearl River scored three in the seventh, while Baton Rouge added a solo run.
Allen Cowart of Pascagoula High (2-2) got the win in his two innings on the mound, giving up two hits and striking out three, while Trevor Bennett of Hancock County High relieved for two frames, giving up three hits, striking out five, and walking two. Other relievers included Colton Lee of Pearl River Central High, one inning, two hits, three strikeouts, Adam Turney out of Oak Hill Academy in West Point, one-and-two-thirds, one hits, two strikeouts, one walk, and Blake Weyenberg of Poplarville High, one-third of an inning, two hits, one strikeout, two walks.
John Shaffer (2-2) got the loss in his two innings of action, giving up three hits and walking two, while relievers included Cody Boyd, two innings, four hits, Chase Caldarera, two innings, four hits, three strikeouts, one walk, and Jarrod Jarreau, one inning, one strikeout, two walks.
Haskin (two RBIs) and Taylor led the Wildcats’ 11-hit effort with two singles each, while Pugh homered (two RBIs), and Houston Davenport out of Thompson High in Birmingham, Ala., Anthony (two RBIs), Demary (one RBI), Deanzel Johnson out of Lanier High in Jackson, Mount (one RBI), and Zach O’Hern of Hancock County High (one RBI) all had base hits.
Baton Rouge finished with 10 hits, led by Nicholas Gobert with a double and a single (two RBIs), while Ridge Buisson, Shayne Narro, and Traylor (two RBIs) had two base hits apiece. Zimmer doubled (one RBI) and White singled.
PRCC committed four errors in the contest to BRCC’s none.
The River returns to action when it hosts MACJC South Division rival East Central Saturday (2 p.m. doubleheader) in Wildcat Stadium in Poplarville before traveling to division foe Southwest Mississippi Wednesday in Wesson (3 p.m. doubleheader).
