River splits in day one of Flag City Classic

MILLINGTON, Tenn. --- Pearl River’s Wildcats suffered their first defeat of the 2014 baseball season here Monday, falling to Wabash Valley College (Ill.) 4-3 before rebounding with a lopsided 9-2 victory over Iowa Lakes CC (Ia.) in the Flag City Junior College Classic in renowned USA Stadium.
PRCC, which is now 7-1 overall, resumes Classic action Tuesday against Southwest Tennessee at 11 a.m., followed by a match up with Ellsworth (Ia.) at 1:30 p.m. WVC evened its overall mark to 3-3 with the victory, while ILCC dropped to 0-3.
Against Wabash, the Warriors went up 2-0 after scoring solo runs in the bottom of the second and third innings, but the Wildcats tied it up with solo runs in the top of the fifth and sixth before taking a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh. WVC tied it up in the bottom of the frame before copping the win with a solo run in the bottom of the eighth.
Jacob Murray (1-0) got the win after relieving in the seventh, giving up a hit and striking out one, while Matt Plezke started and went six innings, giving up five hits, striking out seven, and walking one.
Allen Cowart of Pascagoula High (0-1) got the loss in his one-third inning of relief, giving up three hits, while Brandon Pennington of Sumrall High started and hurled five frames, giving up six hits, striking out one, and walking two. Colton Lee of Pearl River Central High also saw an inning of relief duty, giving up two hits, striking out one, and walking two, while Trevor Bennett of Hancock County High pitched an inning of relief, giving up a hit and walking two.
Jacob Taylor of Picayune High led the Wildcats’ six-hit effort with a double and a single, while Jalen Haskin of Oak Grove High doubled, Kreg Garner of Northwest Rankin High (one RBI), Tracy Hadley of Pascagoula High (one RBI), and Lamar Anthony of Vicksburg High all had base hits.
Carlos Ocaslo paced the Warriors’ 12-hit attack with three singles, while Dane Giesler doubled and singled (one RBI). Manuel DeJesus, Rey Perez, and Alian Silva (one RBI) had two singles apiece, while Carlos Pena singled (one RBI). Tim Barry also had an RBI for Wabash.
Pearl River played error free, while Wabash Valley, a Division I team out of Mt. Carmel, Ill., committed one defensive miscue.
Against Iowa Lakes, Pearl River went up 5-0 in the top of the second, added three more in the fourth and a solo run in the seventh, while the Lakers scored solo runs in the bottom of the second and seventh frames.
Starter Philip Chandler of Stone County High (1-0) picked up the win in his five innings on the mound, giving up six hits and striking out six, while Blake Weyenberg of Poplarville High relieved in the sixth, giving up two hits and striking out two.
Reliever Kris Johnson (0-1) got the loss, striking out two batters, while starter Blake Rogers gave up two hits, struck out four and walked three. Ryan Mose pitched an inning, giving up a hit and a walk, Michael De Los Santos an inning, Tanner Johnson an inning, striking out two, and Austin Smith an inning, giving up two hits.
Nathan Pugh of Starkville High paced the Wildcats’ five-hit effort with a double and a single, while Zach O’Hern of Hancock County High (one RBI) and Taylor (one RBI) both doubled and Haskin singled.
ILCC finished with eight hits, led by Manny Deleon and Juan Perez (one RBI) with two singles each, while Elvin Nunez doubled (one RBI), and Sean Alp, Tanner Johnson, and Hecmart Nieves all had base hits.
Again, Pearl River played error free, while Iowa Lakes committed three.
