River sweeps Holmes

            GOODMAN --- Pearl River Community College swept Holmes here Monday in women’s and men’s MACJC non-division basketball action with the Lady Wildcats pulling off a lopsided 64-39 victory, while the Wildcats were 76-71 winners.
            PRCC’s women improved their overall record to 2-1, while its men remain unbeaten at 5-0. Holmes’ women dropped to 1-5, while its men are now 4-2.
            In the women’s game, the Lady Wildcats led 37-23 at the intermission before outscoring the host Lady Bulldogs 27-16 in the second half to take the 25-point victory.
            Essence Pulliam out of Forest Hill High in Jackson led PRCC with a season- and game-high 16 points, while Prairie View A&M transfer Deandra Darjean out of Yates High in Houston, Tex., added 13 (six rebounds), Kalisha Washington out of Murrah High in Jackson 10, Tiana Dampeer of Lawrence County High (six rebounds), Shanta’ Echols of Sumrall High (nine rebounds), and Skyiesha Moss of Quitman High, eight a piece; Taylor Brister, an East Central CC transfer who prepped at Prentiss High, Elisha Ray out of Yates High in Houston, Tex., and Vamikka Smith out of Murphy High in Mobile, Ala. (seven rebounds), two a piece; and Iesha Dixon of Hinds AHS one.
            Carmesha Nalls paced HCC with 14, followed by Alexis Jackson with 11, Taylor Johnson seven, Tayanna Purnell four, and Desirae Harris three.
            Pearl River hit 39.3 percent (23 of 61) from the field to Holmes’ 26.5 percent (13 of 49), while the Lady Wildcats were zero of 10 from three-point range to the Lady Bulldogs’ five-of-22 (22.7 percent) effort. At the foul line, PRCC was 16 of 25 (64 percent), while HCC was eight of 20 (40 percent).
            In the hotly-contested men’s game, the Wildcats held on to a 42-41 edge at the break and managed to outscore the Bulldogs 34-30 in the second half to take the five-point victory.
            Troy State (Ala.) signee Jeremy Hollimon of Gulfport High paced The River with a game-high 20 points (five RB, three treys), while Kaven Bernard out of Assumption High in Napoleonville, La., scored 14 (eight rebounds), Southeastern Lousiana signee DeAngelo Coleman of South Pike High six, Lester Crosby of Franklinton (La.) High nine (five rebounds), Bryant McGee of West Marion High eight (11 rebounds), Devontai Foye of Hattiesburg High seven, Joshua Johnson out of Carroll High in Monroe, La., six (five assists), and Quintarius Porter out of Forest Hill High in Jackson three.
            Jarvus Williams led the Bulldogs with 15, followed by Patrick Banks with 14, Tamarico Wilson 13, Dayshawn Watkins 10, Thomas Alexander nine, Ondarious Hamlin six, and Travis Johnson and Justin McCleary, two each.
            Pearl River hit 45 percent (27 of 60) from the field to Holmes’ 34.9 percent (22 of 63), while the Wildcats were three of 14 (21.4 percent) from three-point range to the Bulldogs’ four-of-15 (26.6 percent) effort. At the foul line, PRCC was 19 of 31 (61.3 percent), while HCC was an impressive 23 of 29 (79.3 percent).
            The Wildcats travel to Baton Rouge (La.) CC Thursday for a 6 p.m. men’s only contest before BRCC’s men visit Shivers Gymnasium Monday, Nov. 21, for a 6:30 p.m. game. PRCC's women and men open their MACJC South Division schedule Thursday, Dec. 5, against Hinds CC in Utica with 6 p.m. (women) and 8 p.m. (men games).
